Now that I've included the wiring for a rev counter I probably need to buy one. I like the look of the one that JK et al sell that matches the other black face clocks for a 76-79 but the price of £170 is a bit steep. I'd like to fit one in the third clock space - anyone found any other options that won't break the bank?

  2. I’ve got the boggo (80mm?) VDO tach where the clock goes, and it looks fine. Quite pricey these days.

You’ll need a Bus Boys ring (or equivalent clamps) to hold it in from the rear (insert innuendo here...)

Didn't realise a std 80mm would fit. That's good news. Dare I ask what's a bus boys ring?

  4. Lol. It’s like a ring mount with two ears on it to hold the tach into the clock hole from behind. I recall VWH used to import them from Bus Boys in the US. You could just clamp the tach in with two metal tabs, I s’pose.

80mm VDO fits just fine. You’ll likely need to do the “diode-in-series-with-the-line-from-the-coil” mod on it (easy), or it’ll jump all over the place.

Serious question, why are you fitting a rev counter to your 40 + year old slow camper ????

An 80mm Smiths RVC 1414 from a late model MGB, Midget and other BL cars of that era fits and works fine without a diode.

  10. I second the MGB approach, got mine for £30 and works fine. Added a 286 led as you can see in pic[IMG][IMG]

The issue is most outlet rev counters the scale goes up too high, I think the jk ones have the scale changed to more suit air cooled engine

I agree, but not the Smiths RVC 1414, the 0range and red sections and total scale is just right for a Type 4 engine.

Spot on. Found one on fleabay I'm going to bid on. I can't justify the price tag on the JK one.

Seriously Baz, should I take a serious question seriously from a seriously serious person such as your good self. I'm serious.

  15. If you're going for a Smiths, make sure it's the voltage-sensing type, not current-sensing, which Smiths also did on ancient Brit vehicles.

If you're tempted by anything else, also make sure it's not one for a diesel, which are connected to the alternator with a "W" input.

7,000 RPM scale is ok for a van

This is the one I spotted. I'm assuming it's voltage sensitive as I think it's the same as others have used??

None of the Smiths 80mm rev counters are current-sensing.;)

That’ll be fine, it’s voltage-sensing, and the same price I paid for mine 10 years ago.
