Retro bumpers for '79 bay

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bump3r, Mar 10, 2014.

  1. Recently purchased some new retro bumpers for front and rear that are advertised as suitable ' for my late bay. Went to fit them tonight but when I offered them up The realisation hit that the fixings are different. My bolts are two either side, side by side. The new bumper has two bolts either side but one above the other. Any advice on whether it's my bay ( German import) or do you have to modify to get them to fit.

    Thanks for looking

  2. got a pic buddy?

  3. I think there was a post about it on here before, are the new ones Brazilian?

  4. Yes I think they are Brazilian. Other that I have seen have stated that they require modification. These didn't, so you would expect them to fit straight on or at least have the holes in somewhere near the right place
I'll sort some pics out tomorrow.

Yep, seen that on here before with Brazilian bumpers.

  6. Cheers, looks like getting the welder out again...
Wished I'd stuck to original now. Bloody body shop have only just sprayed them.

    Cheers for the advice

  7. What colour are they - could always flog em, keep it simple and go back to standard!

  8. The front - requires either drilling new holes where your mountings are or having captives welded in to the deformation panel. As your are painted then either live with the holes or fit captives.

Rear - wont fit with late bay bumper irons at all and also needs the top corners cutting (dependant on which bumper irons you use).

If youve a tow-bar fitted then its a whole new can of worms.

If it were me then I would sacrifice the paint - fit them, have the unwanted holes welded up and have them re-painted. (or just buy some new late bay ones, paint and fit them which might actually be cheaper.

And if you do decide to get shut then let me know as My rear one has rusted out and needs replacing and my front one is fibreglass so a steel one would go nicely and I already have th holes! (lucky me)
