Replacing fuel pipes

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by VW-Pete, Jul 18, 2017.

  1. Hi all newbie hear. Iv just spotted a small leak on my fuel pipe to the carb. I want to replace all of this before driving.

I have 1600 single carb engine. Could someone please answer the following.

For both fuel and breather pipes. What size pipe do I need and how much should I buy?

Will I need to remove the engine? Never done this before so a link to a video or thread would be great.

Every website I check seems to offer a different internal diameter pipe. Ranging from 5mm to 6mm with a few sizes in between. Just want to be 100% I'm buying to right stuff.

    Thanks pete

The correct size fuel pipe is 5.6mm, Halfords sell Fuel injection pipe with the correct clips and enough to do a 1600cc engine

  4. Thanks, 5.6mm is what I thought from reading on hear. Is the breather pipe also 5.6mm?

The link to vw air-cooled website sells 6mm or 8mm. Could I get away with 6mm or do you think it would leak?

6mm will perish sooner as you have to make the clip tighter to make up for the hose being to big, breathers are 6mm

  6. Thanks bigherb that's a big help. Iv found some 5.5mm 100% ethonal proof line. So that will do the job.

Any idea how much I will need? Can I use 5.5mm for the breather lines as well?

Hve a look at ratwell.com . Some useful info on fuel lines.

  8. All, thanks for your help with this one. I ordered from http://www.vwaircooledworks.co.uk/Fuel-Hose-Kit---Full-details.html 5.5mm internal diameter and 100% ethanol proof line so perfect for what I need. The previous fuel pipe looked to be brand new however they are 5.0mm internal diameter so was to tight and had split a little around the spigots hence the leak.

thanks for the link to this. I managed to find the pipe it was completely rotten one end was not even connected to anything.

potentially saved my Bay from going up in smoke so thanks all.

  9. I'd say it's a worthwhile expense- and in terms of safety you'll struggle to spend "too much"- but don't fall into the trap of thinking that because you've spent a fair wedge on decent quality ethanol ready hoses, they won't split and crack. Keep an eye on 'em, whichever you go for- it's naturally easier to check unbraided hoses.

A 5.6mm designated hose will often be undersize using an offset tolerance. I think when I was doing coolant stuff an 18mm ID hose would be 17-17.5mm ID when measured. Better too tight than too loose.

That's not to say you can use a 6mm ID hose on a 5.6mm spigot and assume that it's the right size. You want a little bit of interference/stretch in case your clips fall off etc. You've got 5.6mm spigots, you need 5.6mm hose (you can get away with 5.5-5.7 as stated)
