Replacement front seats, any advice?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by pHiL, Sep 4, 2011.

  1. As part of the rebuild of the interior, I'm thinking about replacing the front seats. Currently I have some old seats from a Peugeot that a previous owner installed.

Its a walk through model, so just need a couple of seats. I'm currently thinking about some SAAB 9-5 ones, as I've seen a couple about and thought they look pretty good, especially when covered the same as the rock n roll bed etc.

Was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts. Does anyone know how hard it is to install SAAB 9-5 seats in a late bay? Or any other specific seat recommendations?

Currently I have no interior at all in her, but when it comes to fitting a bed etc, is it fairly easy to get the front seats reupholstered at the same time? Are some seats better than others for that?

Also I'm considering turning the passenger seat into a captains chair - Would that affect my seat choice?

Sorry if these are all newbie questions, think my inexperience is showing through! I've got the enthusiasm to get the work done, unfortuantly my knowledge is currently letting me down ;)

Thanks for any help you guys can give

We have the Saab seats for Gusbus - they are a really comfy seat to sit in, and look really great!

We drilled six bolt holes per seat once we had them lined up properly but you do have to remove the old runners first (ours had broken anyway) and make a spacer up to make the height correct (from what I can remember)..anyway, here they are:

Marc (dogsndubs) has them too in Logo

  3. We have taken the saab seats out of ours and replaced them with OG. The saab ones looked good, and were comfortable, but we found them too high. Amanda struggled a little to reach the clutch pedal. I found my head was in the roof. I'm only 6'0.

Mark's do look like they are sitting lower than mine did though? :)

Try and get the best standard vw camper seats you can , they are built for the job , you have to remember car seats are designed for a lower seating position and usually have a bulge at the front ,this can become uncomfortable over any distance , restrict leg room and take your feet higher away from the pedals .
i updated mine with later bay westie high backs , got them off ebay for a tenner and had them recovered , they are ideal as they are made for the job .

    we bought these

And had them recovered to our taste , not everyones but i like em

  9. Saab 9-5 won't fit a Bay. The one's pictured above are either Saab 9000 or 900. Both of those fit. Trouble is, they'll sit you a little too high. The best type of replacement is either the early Porsche 924 or 944 seats. They're almost as easy to fit as Saab 9000s. Other popular replacements seem to be Alfas, Mini (that's the new Mini, not the old Rover one) and Jaguar XJS.

Personally, I first went Saab 9000 black leather - because they're the most comfy seats out there. But they sat me too high. Amongst other problems, the steering wheel came too close to my legs. And I always thought 'these just don't look right in a VW bus - they're too modern-looking'. So I changed them for some early non-electric half leather 924 seats (and had the centre covered in Westy plaid material to match the rest of the bus). They're perfect seats and I can't notice them being any less comfy than the Saab seats. Posrche seats are much more in-keeping with any old VW too.

Purists will of course say keep the original and have them restuffed. Doesn't matter what you do to them though - they'll never be as comfy as Porsche or Saab.

I saw a bus this weekend with Citroen BX seats in. BX's were always comfortable and so to the seats.

As mentioned Saab seats are quite deep in the base. Any seat with a shallow depth seat squab are best. Porsche 924's are great.

Sent from my iLife 4 suite of applications.

  12. I have Saab seats in mine a bit like as above but they are electric ones ( not wired up ) and while they are very comfy Im going back to original as I just think it looks better...
They are just bolted to the floor with no adjustment possible.

I fitted my mates Alfa seats to my van . the drivers seat sat too high & I couldn't lower it because the adjustable mechanism is all built into the runners . What I did was take the runners off the passenger seat and fit that in the drivers side ..hey presto

  16. that's a stunning van you've got there dogsndubs... wanna swap? :p

Baydreams is right they dont fit but one set of runners was broke on the bus anyway (and I chucked one seat away as well) so we bought those. We had to weld in a couple of thickening strips for them to sit evenly.
Ours had the runners from the Saab so all it was a matter of doing was drilling the bolt holes and ensuring they sit square. Bit of a faff but I like them & they are comfy
