Removing engine

  1. You forget to remove the thermostat before dropping the engine if you want to remove the fan housing.:)

    i haven’t got one :p

  3. I fastened the dolly to the bottom of the engine by attaching it with wire around the pushrod tubes to hold it in place. And used the jack under it.

Still might be a bit high if you only have a little jack, the slide it back on a flat piece of ply then rock it back to clear the fan might be your best bet, best thing is to just crack on and make it happen

You need as much height as possible. I dropped mine down onto a spare bit of contiboard, dragged it out from under the jacked up van, then used 3 or 4 rollers (lengths of broom handle would do) to manoeuvre it around

  7. Got one of these and makes ideal bench after, was easier on bus with everything still on and no damage as ratchet engine to it. [IMG]

It’s out, pretty straight forward , jacked each side up and got it on ramps both sides ( couldn’t drive it into ramps as they are on gravel and just slide away ) , engine came out easy enough despite the schoolboy error of leaving the accelerator cable connected ( now needs a new one :p)
Lowered the engine down with the trolley underneath , strapped the engine to the trolley and slid it off the jack and wheeled it away to work on it  had about 3” clearance under the rear valance - just got to wait for some spares and away we go .
Should hopefully be able to drive it off the ramps when done:thumbsup:

  10. Don’t forget to thread that pesky accelerator cable back through the fan housing on the way back in

I wouldnt use pushrod tubes.. they arent exactly structural despite their convenience.

  13. It was just to hold the dolly in place while I got the jack under. I also drilled a couple of holes in the dolly to coincide with the support bar engine mount bolts. It just made it more stable.

All finished , engine out, busted head bolt replaced , heat exchangers repaired , valves adjusted , general check over , starter motor repaired, refitted the engine, fired up first time ... Sounded like I'd left a 10mm socket in the engine somewhere

Turned out that one of the valves had been loosened and not adjusted , must have got distracted ... All adjusted and it's as sweet as a nut ... Ready for techenders

My choice of extraction was pop it on ramps , loads of room , easy to get the engine and Jack out , the biggest issue I had was doing it on a gravel drive ( no option)
