Removable aerial mast

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by PeaSoup, Mar 22, 2013.

  1. I have just managed to snap my aerial mast off while removing my winter cover.

I have seen aerials in the past where you can unscrew the mast and so I'd ideally like to replace mine with one like this so that I can remove it when I put my cover on so that this doesn't happen again.

Does anyone know of a replacement aerial that will fit in the same place but that has a removable mast? All the ones I can find are fixed.

My aerial is fitted on the front panel as in the picture below and is like this one from JK:

What does anyone else do about their aerials when they put their covers on?

I wasn't happy all winter with mine as the aerial was poking out in to the cover and you could hear it rubbing whenever it was windy - was sure it was going to wear it's way through anyway.

    Thanks.

we've got the same aerial but also an aerial topper (about the size of a golf ball) so hopefully it'll not wear (failing that it'll wear a ruddy bigger hole  )

  3. Thanks MorkC68 - that is a good compromise idea if I can't find a removable one. Won't help to stop me catching the whole thing and breaking it when removing my cover though!

very true! We always start at the front & work backwards, the mirrors tend to tangle more than anything though, then the straps get tangled on the bumper and worse still, the cat gets buried under it all lol

I dont know where it came from but the bus has a rubber duck style antenna (wire spring in a rubber sleeve or moulding ) you can see it in the avatar here. No probs with snapping. Just leaves black marks on the cover.

  8. Thanks for the replies.

One that retracts right in would be good, however not seen one the goes right in with the front panel fitting like mine - think the positioning and angle of it would make it virtually impossible for a retractable one to work.

Rubber duck one is a great idea and might try and find one like that if the one I've ordered from CoolAirVW turns out to not be removable.

You're right, the fully retractable ones fit on the bulgy bit.
I have one like yours and clearly in the states when som hooligan snaps it off you can get a replacement that fits over the broken stub with a few grub screws to clamp it it place. This was also snapped off but I repaired it. Maybe something similar available here?

  10. My new aerial arrived from CoolAirVW today, and just as they said it did, the mast screws off from the base:

Perfect - exactly what I need so that I can completely remove it when I put my cover on or when I park somewhere dodgy where it might get snapped off.

Although this black based one from CoolAirVW does unscrew, they said their chrome based one doesn't - thought I'd mention this in case anyone else wants to get one for similar reasons to me.

Thanks for the replies on this everyone.
