'Refurbished' Brake Callipers

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Owen Snell, Jun 11, 2015.

  1. Just a general moan about parts quality, which I know affects us all. I did a complete brake overhaul a few weeks ago with new discs, pads and refurbished a callipers (new crossover not available). The new setup worked much better - firmer pedal and better bite, as you would expect, but then after a couple of longer trips, the Right hand brake would start to make a bit of noise when moving slowly, like it was dragging. I've stripped it tonight and found that the outer pot on that calliper is leaking, with fluid evident around the bottom of the pad. The seal is also damaged, maybe pushed out by the fluid accumulating behind it? I did everything at once so as not to have to look at the brakes for a while, and now the job needs doing again a few weeks later and the van is off the road.

  2. out of interest where did you buy the refurbished callipers?

  3. Coolair.

  4. Hmm I've got a set of refurbished calipers from coolair on mine, last couple of weeks a squeal has developed from front brakes.......maybe I needs a look

  5. The squeal was off load when warmed up. I assume the leakage pressurised behind the seal and the seal enough to push the pad slightly against the disc.

  6. did you get refurbished because you have a '71/72 and the narrower callipers ?

  7. Yes, crossover.

  8. Fair play to Coolair, they called back to return my message this morning and are sending out a replacement today.

Coolair are nice guys. Very friendly, helpful and never shi tty with anyone. Always a good thing in the world of frustrating events that we live in.
