    Recommend a Generator?

We are looking into getting a generator for our Hook up and was wondering what ones people would recommend or even to stay away from?

I guess smaller and quieter the better so its more portable but please say if the bigger and louder ones are better.

Also if you know general costs of the ones you recommend or a link is great.

Bloody things should be banned from campsites.

If one needs that much power one is taking to many gadgets.

Some caravan club meets ban the use of them, can't see the point of going away and sitting in the van enough to need more than the 12v or maybe a hook up if you have a long weekend/full week.....20 odd years of caravanning before i got the bus and i've never needed one.

  10. The Honda is extremely quiet by comparison and they are tougher than iron. Trouble is, this is reflected painfully in the price. Sadly though, even a quiet Honda is loud, especially in the middle of a serene campground.
If you choose a cheaper brand, you will find there are two types. The 2-stroke engine. This one is generally the louder cheaper one. It is a good engine design that packs a lot of punch, but you will have to premix your fuel with oil every time you fill it. Also, with oil in the fuel it's going to smoke.
The other type takes pure gasoline and has a separate oil reservoir, like your bus. These are a little quieter and easier. Just do keep an eye on that oil level until you get used to it's consumption rate. Many a new generators are lost for lack of a few ounces of oil.
The best way to quiet a small generator is to dig a hole and place it in it. This is not as crazy as it sounds, especially if you have a very small 1000W type. And if you're on the beach or in a sandy area- 5-10 minute job. Then you can partially cover the hole with cardboard and put some soil/sand on top.
I noticed somebody suggested you go with solar instead. Brilliant. One giant solar panel at about $700+ (400-500 GBS) should give you about 130W. Not enough. The cost per watt ratio is still simply out of range.
The best power solution in my opinion is more batteries. Not just one more on the other side of the engine, but also 1-2 more under the bench seat. If that space is too valuable, get a tiny trailer, the kind motorcycles pull. (used ones are cheap and abundant) They have room for two batteries, a cooler, lanterns, a badminton net and maybe a bothersome 4yr old if you fold him neatly. Just hitch it on and plug it into your system and let your alternator charge them. They will give you enough power to run a fridge, water pump, a small fan, music and lights (get L.E.D.s) for most of a weekend. If they get low, just go for a drive to charge them back up.

  14. Got our four stroke small geny from machine mart.£200 + vat.
Seems a bit overkill to run our lasses hair dryer and straighteners.

    Very quiet and lightweight.

Sorry unless you have medical equipment they should not be allowed after all most of us go camping to get away from things.
