Rechromed cab door handles

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by Ronrich, Sep 24, 2019.

  1. I have a couple of pairs of nice cab door handles, Genuine not repro, I could sell them as they are but I've been asked to look into getting a Splitscreen cargo door handle that I'm selling rechromed for him to match all his other shiny bits.
SO....are any of you interested in having a pair off me once done, yes, price will depend on cost to do them as we all know it's not cheep, anything worth having is not cheep, I'll try to get a cost before I go ahead as I don't want to get stuck with them, I just thought it's worth offering them to you shiny as it's point less you replacing like for like.
Then all you need do is to swap out your barrels...yes you could do it your self, and some might, but I just thought I'd ask..
If this goes well then I have quite a few tailgate locks I'd like to get shot of too.
Let's have some sensible feedback please.

I’d be very interested if they were already done but I’m just about to order a pair from C&C (£40 each) to collect from the UK when I’m there in a couple of weeks.

  3. I would be interested but i suspect the price will be extortionate as I was quoted £500 to chrome my 2 bow roof rack

Yeah but that’s lots bigger than a door handle

Not necessarily, he might have extra large door handles:rolleyes:

  6. At £40 each they will be repro...it's a free world, you pays your money.etc etc
Will anyone care...probably not.....but then there are those who will prefer to use genuine handles.....

I care and I’d prefer to use genuine handles, that’s why I said I’d be interested if yours were done now.

These are the ones I’m looking at: ‘New German quality door handles are made 100% the same quality as the OEM Genuine German door handles made back in the 70s’

  8. I have a pair of genuine handles and asked a mate for a rough idea as he gets bits chromed every few months for various projects.
He reckoned about 40 quid per handle as a ballpark figure but that's 'Up North' ...

  9. I'd be interested in a set ronrich, obviously dependant on price. Maybe a late bay sliding door handle too?

  10. Well they look fine, the prof is in the pudding as they say..
They look great and proably are, or should I say are, as it's in print and you can't claim something is when it's not.
The last lot, no nessasary from C&C, were Brazilian with the black key, if these are as good as they say, then I'm wasting my time.
It seems incredible they can make them for that..
Splitty handles were the same, soft material led to loose door lock and breakages within the workings.
    Have things changed, anyone know..?

  11. To be honest Dave, the units I have are 100% better than most second hand handles I've come across, that's why I have them, no pitting or fading, shinny, no chips or delamanation of the chrome, it just if I do a job, especially if I'm replacing a part, I want it to be as good as it was new, I see no point doing all that work, just to have another handle on a van.
I have a late bay sliding handle too and it's fine, again it's pointless expecting people to pay top dollar for something they already have, they allways want better..
I've mailed a local guy and the guy gave me a ballpark as he would like to see them, £55 plus VAT as a start point, add in what I'd like to have for my blanks and you looking at around £95 per handle.
Will I sell them at that, might, might not, you don't know and cant say till I take the plunge, invest cash to find the true cost, by that time, everyone has gone and bought £40 odd set from C&C
Here is a question for you all, will these £40 handles have better chrome than mine and will they last as long.
Sorry but I can't get my head round what I have to pay to get chroming done and they can sell them for, anyone know where they are made?

  12. I've had a pair of repro cab handles ( with the clumsy black keys ) on the van for around 15 years - they're still pretty good but maybe the chroming was better back then ??

  13. Well I can do handles at £65 exchange, take your barrels out and send them to me, I send you rechromed ready to fit your old barrels back in..
I have to wait 2-3 weeks to collect, and if the price quoted turns out correct, it's a win win....
I've dropped off four bay units, a late sliding door unit and five rear hatch lock surrounds.
    Let's see....

  14. Dave, dropped my parts off today, I included the door handle too, don't worry, you don't have to buy it, I just thought I'd get it done anyway.
Two pairs of cabs too...for these I'm able to do for £65 exchange, each.
    Sliding handle £40 exchange.
Got to wait 2-3 weeks to be done..

  15. If anyone is interested, prices worked out better than expected, even I was shocked, so let's wait and see..

  16. Mine are very pitted, is that a problem?

  17. Do they do bumpers ? Can I ask who your using ? I’m half tempted to buy a pair of bumpers but depending on rechroming costs depends if it worth it

  18. Last time I did a pair of NOS Split bumpers cost £600....they are big.

  19. Well yes, once the pitting is too deep, work and time would normally get you a good finish, but all handles I know are made of pig iron, soft, cheep, but that's what's used, or was back then, to rid you of the pitting you need to sand them down I guess, or spend more time filling with copper, all adds to cost.
I have good units and a few spare, so you could buy a set from me or ask about for a good pair then send to me in exchange, it's just easier and cost affective for both parties to have half reasonable bases to start with.

  20. Would you pm me the company’s details?

That’s not as bad as I was thinking
