    Turns out it was just the wheel falling off. Pretty wierd actually, the castle nut was finger tight but the split pin still in place.
    I found I had some outer bearings in stock so replaced that, replaced the CV's, tightened up the front bearing and the noise has gone. So it was one of those, but most likely the loose wheel.

    So how did the castle nut become loose? This is not a quiz because I don't know the answer!
    @davidoft 's a clever bloke, I bet he knows. :)

    Maybe the nut was never tight ;)

    Most likely the drums a bit worn where it hit the spacer, it causes the drum to chatter loose by wearing it away, pretty common on beetles. Check the drum where it goes to the spacer and the spacer for not having flat mating faces

    Thermal expansion? Did it get hot when you were hoofing it up to 90 odd?

    Yes it's chattered away, the splines are a bit loose and it wears under the nut as well.
    When I got the bus both were loose but with no split pins however you could see the wear.

    Have you seen the price of 68 read drums? :eek: I've heaved it tight again and jumped a bit on the castle nut this time.

    I hope not but it's true that the wheels will never have been turning that fast before. :D

    Perhaps I should have the wheels balanced, I usually don't bother on my campers unless I get a shakey wheel. :thinking:

    Just get them turned flat on a lathe and get the nuts turned flat too :)

    I know, but... They lasted 15,000 miles before only this one came loose and I've jmped on it now. Next time maybe...
    I'll check the other one tomorrow it was getting a bit late. :)

  13. I've ordered them now. So we shall see.

  14. I had exactly the same problem on my 68 last week. Same symptoms with the castle nut being finger tight despite it being torqued correctly when reassembled (3+ years ago). Just replaced both bearings and I'm in the process of putting it all back together, have you had any issues since? Noticed a very slight lip where the drum sits against the spacer as well

    I don't have the van now, but had no further issues. :)

  16. I thought you had changed since but wasn't sure :) Good to know, thanks. I think I'll reassemble and keep an eye on it for now then, don't want to shell out for a new drum if I can help it. Old one seems in good nick aside from the lip and the new ones are mega expensive
