Rear tailgate badge fitting

  1. Hi - My 78 bay was missing the script tailgate badge, so I picked one up at an aircooled autojumble last year. It’s an original metal Volkswagen script badge complete with pins. Does anyone have any advice on fitting? Assume there are locating holes on the rear tailgate which correspond with the pins on the badge. Should I try to find the locating holes or just drill new ones? Also assume it will need some form of bonding to hold it in place. Any advice much appreciated.

Late bays weren’t fitted with the tailgate script , you can either drill holes or cut off the pins and stick it on

Holes, well painted and starlock clips to fix as used to hold soft toy eyes on. And glue/ sealant anyway for the holes.

  4. Hello,

the old "VOLKSWAGEN" with its underline was approx. 8 cm away from the left edge of the flap and approx. 9.5 cm from the lower one.

My "Bulli"* stainless steel lettering will now last 15 years simply stuck on with Pattex Classic adhesive in deserts and snow.

Almost right - unless it was an automatic or a 2000 L from South Africa...

    "VW AUTOMATIC"

I've always wanted a script one on my '78 Bay as well, I think it look great. I must get round to buying one!

  6. As @davidoft says, a standard 78 bay would not have had a badge from the factory, unless it was an automatic, in which case it would have had VW_Automatic on the rear as @rsbadura posted above.

I also thought the rear looked a little empty with no badging so i got a NOS 78 spec badge (beetle originally i think)? which i fitted in the same location as the automatic badge would have been. I measured off one i found at volksworld from memory.. yes it has pins on the back (beetle tailgate has holes) i ground these off and used some scotch pad sticky to fix it on. its been on there ~10 years now so that obviously is sticky enough :)

  7. Some great advice here, I’m all for keeping mine standard but agree the tailgate looks a bit sparse. It would have had a Holdsworth metal badge but chances of finding one are slim! Will fit the script badge I think. Cheers Rob
