Rear seat belt solution

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by icepug, Mar 24, 2013.

  1. I am starting to do the interior of the van and before a put any of the units backs I think it would be wise to sort out some seat belts for the back. I'm going to need two but I have a super Viking so not really sure where/how to do them. I will get them fitted professionally for safety but does any one have advice or pictures on how they did theirs?!? I think with the super Viking layout it will be one behind the drivers seat and one opposite that but I'm open too suggestions.

Below is a picture of the rear set up. Can't find one of the front but its basically two buddy seats behind the front seats with a cushion on

  3. My van (same Viking set-up) has a lap belt for each seat of the four seats.

  4. Im in the middle of trying to get mine fitted, where are you getting yours fitted please? Is there someone down in bedfordshire that you trust and will use?

Ive just discovered that it may be an engine and fuel tank out job in order to do so!! To either us or replace the existing seatbelt mounts, gutting as its going to cost even more!

  5. No need to drop the engine if the mounts are allready there

  6. Heres what mine looks like from inside for your reference and comparison

    Heres the wheel arch mounting

And heres whats under the bed

Are these old seatbelts or just retaining straps for storage stuff?

    Thanks guys!

The ones with the red straps are luggage etc, aftermarket any who. The fat plastic screws are plugs screwed into the factory seatbelt mounts, the wheel arch ones appear to have been welded up and looks like the bed is mounted to them

  8. Davidoft is correct

Brucie where are you located dude if your close enough to me ill fit your belts for you
As long as theres a spreader plate behind that arch panel where the bed mounts its just a case of bolting them in

  9. looking to do the same with my Viking... strange seeing my exact same interior in a different van!
currently have a single seat belt fitted to the offside rear seat but looking to get more fitted so I can carry four in the back

  10. I live just south of sheffield mate, youre in yorkshire somewhere arent you? :)

  11. Is it possible to piggy back off the front seatbelt a mounts?!?

    Not for rear ones.
You can piggy back the bed fittings with suitable length bolts though.

if your talking about the rear facing seat directly behind the front yes, but you don't need to as there is a second set of fixings

  14. Going to have a proper look when I take everything out to replace the flooring, hope your right!

  15. yea u right man there are a another set of fixing holes slightly higher than the others for another 2 seat belts on the front seats. As for the rear yea you can use the bed mounts they are well fixed in but do use some spreading mounts ie heavy duty washers wider the better and hard steel.

  16. Im just below scotch corner on the A1 motorway as it is now

If your within roughly a hundred miles of me i will pop down or up to assess what you need as long as you cover my fuel cost and feed me some dinner
Thats all ill ask as an inspection of what needs doing

I dont get out much as a house husband so i dont mind doing that if it covers my costs

I can weld and modify what you have however

I wont weld in the high point for 3 point belts but anything else ill happily take on
Im only fitting lap belts into my own bus that is a converted panel van so has no fixings

By law rear facing seats or side facing seats dont need a belt fitted the only reason they will be fitted to my bus is to stop people flying about on rough terrain

You've got the lower points for seatbelts there (so easy to do lapbelts), but its the upper mounts you'll have most issue with if you're wanting to fit 3 point belts, as the upper mounts fit into the lower window frame on a factory camper - whereby as your bus is a converted panel - the metal for this is not there, its a fair job welding in a mount substantial enough, as the original threaded mounts with their spreader plates mounting in the window frames are about 10" wide. theres bound to be a pic somewhere (probably in my resto thread)

  18. When i redid ours (still semi-finished) i installed 3 set of belts. Safety first!~ our came out of an old school bus.

  19. Para! I may have to take you up on that! I have the top fixing for the 3 point belt there already as there is a blanking screw along the bottom of the window. so as long as I have load spreaders and a long enough bolt of the bed fixing to the wheelarch, I may not need any welding at all?

I have blanking screws along the fire wall for the lower fixing,
a blanking screw on the top fixing below the window
If I get long enough bolts and big enough washers I can piggy pack off of the bed fixing on the wheel arch.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks

The bed fixings on the wheel arch are seatbelt fixing that have been used for the bed as they are convenient. Sounds to me like all the fixings are there. To check if the wheel arch fixings are the correct ones try a seatbelt bolt in one of them. There are 4 fixings on the bulk head, 1 on each arch plus the ones under the windows, this allows for either 3, 2 point lap belts or 2 , 3 point belts and one lap belt in the centre
