Rear hatch / tailgate seal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by stevem, Apr 14, 2015.

  1. Can any one tell me the difference between the German and Brazillian tailgate seals.
Profile, fit, cut outs on back or just rubber quality...?
Price is quite different so there must be something between them.

Basically how can I tell them apart

    Cheers
    (Ps, Yes l have searched)

  2. Get the ones that are grey rather than black rubber. Mine fitted perfectly without glue the lid shuts properly and no cutting needed.

  3. So is that the only difference, the colour/ material?

    Cheers

A Vewib seal is what you want. :)
Soft and grey (Black actually but powdery).

The VW Brazil one is basically a tube with one flat side, like a stretched D in profile, the same shape all the way round, the genuine ones are moulded to the 4 corners around the lock down both sides and across the top and bottom, all the sides have different profiles, Brazil is nowhere near as good as the proper seal

  6. I have one of them. It's poop.

  7. Sounds like the one I have in a bag..... Marked made in Brazil. Other than the colour it looks identical to the one on the bus which is black and keeps pulling out at the top when I shut the tailgate.

  8. Sounds like I have a Brazillian one then :(
That can go back then, equivalent to 211829193E my arse.

    Cheers for the help

Your tailgate perhaps needs adjusting. :)

  10. Yes. But that was for another topic, its also too far to the nearside..
It sounds like the seal should have squareish corners and mouldings down the side & around the lock, which this one nor the one on the bus has.
So I guess they are both Brazillian despite the VW bag with the new one

Yes square corners at the top.

  12. Just had a nightmare with my tailgate seal. It was leaking along the top so I've just taken the seal out to investigate. The whole metal channel came away with the seal and disintegrated into a pile of rust. Looks like I shall be doing a bit of fabricating and welding over the next few days.

Thats all I seem to do at the moment. Every quick job takes hours as I find more rot & bits to replace

  14. New correct seal received from Just Kampers, and what a dream to fit! It goes in, fits perfectly and stays in without any glue :)
Just need to sort out the other little "alignment" problem now.

  15. My new seal from Just Kampers has arrived as well. Still got to do a bit of finishing off and painting and hope to fit the seal on Sunday. Fingers crossed that it fits ok.

  16. Well to my frustration i have wrestled with this issue many times and as a result have various versions of the seals to remind me what crap is out there and what the differences are. The origional or ones that are good are hollow inside not solid rubber and as a result squash nicley in place without having to flatten them in overtime woth the door lol.....
