Is the flexi in good nick?

  3. My biggest bugbear is hot brakes. I must have worked through at least 10 possibilities on different buses including the hoses. My top 3 are:

    1. star wheel retaining springs u/s.
    2. wheel bearing
    3. sticking hand brake

No 1 causes the brake adjustment to close up. You might fix them, but I ended up fitting new backing plates.

  4. my bet is sticking handbrake [in the tube]...

    flexi could be goosed also...

  5. So it doesnt bind when jacked up yet it binds when rolling! How do you know and is there excessive wheel bearing play?

  6. ....if it's binding, either the shoes don't have enough clearance to start with, and are expanding when hot..star nuts
they have sufficient clearance but aren't returning to their original position once you've pressed the brake pedal...(check cylinders...adjust star nuts again and centre the shoes)
    the drums are warped...renew
the h/brake cable is corroded and not returning...fix or renew
the spacer bar & spring positioners for the shoes aren't fitted properly...
the shoes are fitted the wrong way round...
    the w/bearings are toast

  7. When you rebuilt did you check the piston in the cylinder was the right way up. If not the shoe will not push it back in as mating surfaces are not meeting properly and it is being pushed up into the cylinder wall not in. Acts like a ratchet only allowing outward movement hence the binding

  8. Thanx for all your replies guys. Will check all these out today hopefully if my 2year old lets me . The one thing I did notice when doing the final adjustment on the handbrake is that to get the bar level , the problematic side cable appears slightly longer . Couldn't feel any play in the bearings .its literally just had MOT too. As said before did have an issue with this side before changing all the internal gubbins.

  9. One thing I did find was that the handbrake cable runs through a metal duct under the axle. This had got bent on one side due to jacking I think. It affected the balance rather like you describe.

  10. problem solved guys!! The ha brake cable was fouling the lower return spring and also the spacer bar was wrong way round causing the trailing shoe to pop out of the spacer bar groove and not return into it . Will take it for a longer spin to confirm all is good. Thanks for all ur input. Am off to Mickleton nr Middleton in teesdale this weekend for a wedding !so if any of u nearby pop round to the crown inn for a pint ;)

  11. I refitted my shoes according to the photo in a crappy Autodata manual....turns out the photo in the manual had been reversed:rolleyes:
thought it looked odd when i was doing it....
