Rear beam end rust

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by jim mcglynn, Apr 24, 2021.

  1. Is this bad? Or is it just a cover for the rear beam? The inner seems sound. But this outer, I pulled off a bit off rusty metal to reveal the hole. Note, i have just wire wheeled it, hence it looking brown.

  2. Are there actually any holes in the "collars" holding the tube on? give everything a good wire-brushing so you can see.

Hopefully the rot is only in the outer conical covers. If the inner tube is intact, you are going to have to weld some plates on there to build it up again.
In any case, I would try hitting it with a hammer, theres a fair deal more "structure" there that looks like its mostly rust. You wont be able to weld to anything that gives way when hit with a half pound hammer for instance. Its either rotten or less than a millimetre thick inside the rot.

If it’s solid inside, just make up a section of the collar in 2mm steel.

PS, you have a child’s prodding stick, if that goes through anything, it’s made of Kit Kat wrapper :p

  5. Thanks all. I will put away my child's prodding stick, and get my dads hammer out .
