Random part found in footwell

  1. Found this bit with part number 211 415 599 helpfully stamped on it - insulating washer - steering column. Is it not meant to go in between the column and tube? Is there an easy way to get it back without disassembly? It got to the foot well without disassembly![IMG]

Tricky to get back in place, it insulates around the steering lock. Yours is a bit damaged but would work...probably. Does your horn keep going off on it's own?

  3. Yes, it just tucks up under the bit of the steering column that houses the indicators etc to insulate it from the tube that runs to the floor (outer steering column).

  4. Nope, no random horning, probably waiting for some incredibly embarrassing situation to start playing up. Like going past a speed cop in a 20 zone.

  5. Is it possible that there is another one installed correctly and this is one that somebody left inside the dash 30 years ago that just dropped out a couple of months ago?
Does it go where I am pointing in the photo? If so, can't see how it could have escaped![IMG]

Your pic a bit small but that's the height yes. The big slot in your insulator (was a hole but ripped, that's how it fell out) is where the steering lock passes through the outer into the inner column and faces toward the front of the van. You should have to separate the lock away from the outer column to fit it, but as your hole is a slot you might be able to work it back up from below...but it'll just fall out again...so what would be better would be to separate the lock away from the column and fit it the other way up thereby outwitting gravity. Exactly how you do that I forget but you'll work it out. Some people I believe wind a bunch of electrical tape around the column which lasts for a while...or not. The original is quite tough stuff - Teflon?

  7. Found a picture on the Schofield site that shows my bit looking intact. Possibly the reason it has fallen out is that it was installed upside down. Taking the lock apart looks a total palava involving tools I don't have and lots of downside risk so just jammed it back up the wrong way up and hope for the best - one less random bit lying around![IMG]

  8. Jinx.... had exactly the same experience a few years ago. Never bothered putting it back though!
