Quick tips required

  1. Hello and Merry Christmas all. Been absolutely AGES since I posted and almost as long since I drove my van.

Anyway, today as a seasonal present to myself, I'm swapping out my dead starter battery and putting in a new shiny Bosch S5.

It all looks simple enough, but I'd appreciate any tips for doing this simple job, er, simply.

    Disconnect old battery
    Remove old battery
    Replace with new battery
    Connect new battery
Stand back and admire your work
Be astounded how much better an S5 is than your previous battery!

...attach +ve first so if your spanner hits anything there won't be sparks.

  5. Well it sounds like NOTHING CAN GO WRONG.

I didn't know neg first so thanks for that. And the custard tip as well. Does that apply to creme anglais and Angel Delight too?

Neg off first when taking it off , + on first when putting it on .

  9. if you havent done it yet also be careful when lifting the battery out not to catch and damage any wires as its an awkward angle. still only a five minute job. what you putting in, I put a S4 063 in mine last weekend.

  11. Be careful, tho'

Many people are electrocuted every year changing their car batteries...

    Eh? ^^^

Its damn hard getting enough current (0.1 to 0.2A through the heart area) with 12 volts across the hands.
Its even quite hard with dry hands and 240v, having done this a few times myself. If you worry about it and have sweaty hands with mains, that might suffice.

Burning yourself on a short or doing your back in getting it in or ripping the wires off the tail light beside it while wiggling it into place more likely.

And fitting a leisure battery with the terminals the other way round as a starter battery could be ... expensive.

  13. I was kidding...

  17. Well that was pretty simple. S5 063 in place. Just need to get whatever's stopping it start and idle properly sorted in the new year. Bumped it down the hill and had a pleasant seven mile spin down to the rather flooded River Roding and back.
