Quick idle speed question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the crumpets, Mar 23, 2013.

  1. My idle speed sounds higher than usual, not sure why i haven't changed anything, will get a tacho out later and see.

What damage could a high idle speed do, i understand that the engine will be working harder so get hotter but then the fan will be working faster. Then when i am driving its not at idle speed anyway, it is only ever at idle speed just before i set off, at traffic lights or when i am stuck in traffic

    Just wondering thats all

  2. It won't do any harm.

Is your choke coming off properly, or is it stuck on fast idle?

  3. Not sure about the choke, How would i know?
it does go through the notches behind the idle screw. when i drive the van, it doesn't stall or splutter at junctions after driving which i would have thought would happen, but then again i don't know that is why i just asked the question:D

  4. When the choke's done its job, the stop pin should be on the very lowest "step" of the fast idle cam.

As a starting point, I'd measure the revs at idle to see if your ear's deceiving you ;)

  5. Thanks for this Snotty, the stop pin does drop down to the very lowest step and as it drops you can hear a slight change for a couple of seconds in the engine.
Am going to see what it is idling at, i was just wondering if it did any damage if it was idling fast.

  6. No damage. You're just wasting fuel ;)

Guess you've checked this, but maybe your cable is stuck, holding the throttle open.

I had the throttle tube rattling around in the fan shroud, sometimes it would stick out further and hold the throttle open. Also when I looked beyond the firewall I found the throttle cable only had two strands left, the frayed ends would catch as well..

  9. Mine was doing this when the throttle tube came loose out of the rear of the fan housing
Popped it back in place and reached round the back to fit a cable tie and this worked untill i got round to dropping the engine
When i fit the engine back in ill fit the rubber grommit thats supposed to hold it in place but ill also fit a small fuel pipe clamp aswell to stop it happening again

  10. the other possibility is the timing might have moved or got stuck slightly advanced.
