question about brush painting

  1. Hello again,

we have a few rust spots and areas that need treating. I am a total novice when it comes to knowledge about the black art of painting a van.

I have read on other threads about rustoleum paint.

I am looking into getting some, the questions are
    1. As it is a rust proofing paint does it have to be painted onto bare metal or can i sort the rust spots (fill where necessary) spray primer on the brush paint over the primer?
    2. If i brush paint the paint on, do i paint a coat flatten it of with wet and dry then paint another coat and flatten off till i have got the required covering?
    3. If above, do i then use a cutting compound and then polish to the desired shine?
    4. Apart from rustoleum are there any other decent products people have used?
    5. At the moment we have two pack paint on the van will the rustoleum react to the 2pack?

Any advice or simple tips would be appreciated

if it's bare metal then use a self etching primer after that the paint will stick to any thing

why not use a small gloss roller ? yes it does pay to flatten the bumps down a bit with each coat, your not after a complete smooth finish at this stage

    3. If above, do i then use a cutting compound and then polish to the desired shine?

once painted and left many weeks to go hard wet sand the body work down using finer and finer grades of samd paper. Then use a cutting compound to get the shine back

    4. Apart from rustoleum are there any other decent products people have used?

any enamel coach type seems to do the job

    5. At the moment we have two pack paint on the van will the rustoleum react to the 2pack?

my van has been 5 different colours in the past and the rustoleum seems to stick to anything as long as it's clean and dust free

here's our resto topic on my local forum

  5. ^what M_B said. Rustoleum seems to be happy going over anything. I'd thin it with white spirit first.

Be aware that it my take a (considerable) while for Rustoleum to harden completely.
