I have a friend who has bought an old 1979 diesel Mercedes saloon ...an import from Hong Kong it was imported by some one else before he bought it The guy did not sort the plate out issue early enough so it's stuck with the q plate . He would like to try and get it to an age related plate . Question is ..do any of you folk know if this is at all possible and the best route to go down . Thanks .
You need to prove it’s age, I would start by contacting Mercedes, the dvla will tell you what forms are required
i done it with vw van as david said first of all birth cert and a letter from mercedes club and engineers report fill in form and fee
He has been in touch with DVLA and they said there is no way of changing it once it has been on a q plate for a certain length of time ...can't remember the time over he said it was . I have told him that there are a lot of departments in the DVLA and can differ on depending on who you actually talk to . I have had this happen when trying to re register a classic truck ....bloody Swansea .
You can't private plate a Q! They can be changed as @shielsy said but it's a faff, vehicles are only issued Q plates when they are of questionable age/origin. If the plate was issued due to a lack of paperwork/documentation when it was imported, and the documentation can now be obtained to prove it's age/origin, then i see no reason for them to not give it an age related plate.
mine was q plated it said age un known , so i got cert and engineers letter and took pics of the chassis plate that was up under the dash lhd left hand side of steering column it was x german army ,then they issued a new number
You can't change the plate at all when it's a Q,unless DVLA do it for you, which they won't! until the age/origin has been established
