Pushrods tubes loose!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Clive Neilands, Dec 8, 2013.

  1. Had my nose up under the motor today and confirmed that my pushrod seals are knackered!
They are so knackered i can rotate them by hand! Got the new parts including new rocker covers, bales and gaskets.
Cleaned it up so they are ready for changing when i get back from sea in 5 weeks.
After that job is done i will put the rear of the van up on stands and degrease everything.
Not looking forward to that dirty job but it needs to be done.

  2. What colour/make of seals you got mate?

  3. Green viton ones!

  4. where is the question...?:D

  5. Have a good trip :)

  6. Do they slide back and forth easily as well as spinning around? There should be a retaining wire which fits around the underneath of the headgear and pushes against the push rod tube. If this isn't located properly the tubes will move around a lot. Reference to the seals is you ideally need the green viton seals. These come in the reinz gasket kit. These are best installed dry or with a smear of fresh engine oil. I also put a light smear of permatex 3h around the seals. I've yet to have a leaker
    :)

  7. Btw, you might want to clean it all up before you change the seals, that way there is less chance of you contaminating the engine and your shiny new seals
    :)

What do you do at sea btw?
    :)

  8. I noticed the wire retainers were there when I put the rocker covers on Clive.

  9. I know how clean everything should be to keep it sealed,i will use a soft scotch pad on the o-ring seating surfaces.
They only rotate and yes Dicky the retainers are in place.
I work on a seismic survey vessel as a Shiftleader for the mechanical dept. onboard
Work with hydraulics and seismic equipment, not ship engines.
I used to be a car mechanic but just did my apprenticeship and did a few years and then went on to other stuff.
I am enjoying working on this van, brings back memories of lying under dirty oily motors, lovin it!

  10. Use silicon grease to ease them into place. Thats what someone on here advised me - rather than normal grease, lasted a bit longet this time!

  11. The question is answered in the replies to the post.

  12. Ok,silicon grease it is,molycote 111,good stuff!

  13. dropping big weight`s on the sea bed ie whales..

  14. We all need oil! Sell your cars and dont use fossil fuels and then have a dig at me.(joke)

  15. Talk like that and you'll have Greenies camped outside your house in their nylon tents and polyester sleeping bags, writing rude posters with their plastic marker pens ;)...

  16. If they are on bicycles with no grease on the chains and all the plastic parts swapped out with wooden ones then they got a leg to stand on.Fossil fuels are everywhere, clothes, appliances, plastic etc
What you think they use to lubricate the turbines and gearboxes in windmills?
Everyone should investigate and find out how many things originate from the oil industry, you will be surprised!
Not to mention old vw vans!
Of course my comments above still doesnt mean its right, its just is as it is.
Dont forget all the conflicts and wars that have been started because of this black gold!

  17. We are obliged by law to have marine mammal observers onboard who have the power to stop our operations, they do do that alot and it costs us lots of money! I have spotted whales myself and shut down operations,we all care onboard even though we take the ******* out of the onservers! They give it back equally mind though.

  18. Neat bit of irony there :D

  19. @Clive Neilands ,
Where is your Seismic survey ship operating ?
I was chief engineer on a helicopter operation, doing a seismic survey in the mangrove swamps in Nigeria.

Ive worked alot is Asia and Australia in the past 6 years.
Nice to close to home and dont have to worry about jetlag.
I was flying every 5 weeks to Perth,Oz for 3 years on the trot, you get used to jetlag and long flights, bonus is that im getting paid when im travelling, door to door salary!
    Nigeria sounds scary!
So you were doing the choppers for a land crew?
