  1. The slot on a type 4 points down.. to hold the tube retainer wire . Are the rocker rocker mounts the same on a type 1?

The studs were as fitted on VW boxed and branded Autolinea heads. The blocks almost went over those studs the wrong way up.. about 1mm proud so almost invisible from above..

Take care with elephants feet style rocker arm adjusters - if they end up off centre on the valve stems they can rock over and push stock wavy washers and clips off the rocker arm. Which is messy and was the final straw for one of my engines. The foot went down the side of the stem, popped off and then the clip broke and the exhaust valve stayed closed causing backfiring shaking the dowels out on the flywheel. Game over for the engine..
I am not sure if it rocked and broke the clip or the clip broke and it then rocked off..

Need to use shimmed solid assemblies to avoid the risk.

But the blocks have one big flat face to sit against the head and one small face to put the nut against. How on earth would anyone think they went the other way up and then go to the trouble of ramming them on with the help of the nut? lol I hope this wasn't you Mike! If so I apologise for my insulting language but the point remains - if someone is that kack-handed and un-mechanical, they should put the spanners down and trust the job to someone who has half a clue.

True, I seem to remember it was a long time back I did this .. once. I hadnt had the bus long and this was about the first thing I did before I had committed most of the assembly of a VW T1 engine to memory.

  6. So I rebuilt the shaft with the left on the right and unfortunately it made it worse so reversed it again. Something is out with the whole geometry and I am wondering if the head is slightly off.

I’ve now taken off the Empi tube and replaced with a Scat one and it is clear but only by a very very small margin so it might still rub when running.

Now waiting for some new pushrods in case that one is bent (along with washers as it is missing a couple on the shaft bolts) and then will check it again.

The rod isn’t bent; the rub would only be on one side if it were.
Are the holes in the pedestals in the centre or offset?

  8. They look offset to me.

  9. This picture was before I fitted the Scat tube. I’ll take a picture of how it looks now tomorrow.

If they’re offset maybe they have been mixed from one head to the other. Keeping the split at the top you could try swapping them end to end and head to head.

  11. Don't know if this is a known phenomena with the type 1 motor, but another issue that could cause this would be excessive wear in the rocker arm bushes or shaft.

Interesting you should say that - I have a couple of T1 rocker assemblies that are galled and grooved where they have run out of oil where the rockers pivot . And that means metal had moved. .

  13. With the Scat tube on I have a little bit of clearance I’ve attached before and after. I think there was a little wear on rockers but not much. 5E06E782-8CED-48FB-81AF-B08ABD3D1A1F.jpeg BCDC9EFC-8D89-4CCC-8372-8E9F93285837.jpeg
