Propex fitting and safety questions......

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Fronkjunior, Sep 1, 2011.

  1. Hi all, I have bought a Propex and this will be placed in the bus soon as I have someone cutting the necessary holes in the floor. This guy has raised a few questions though. He has told me that the Propex should only be used when the vehicle is stationery as the flame may blow out otherwise (yep, seemed strange to me too!). He also told me that the gas connection must be fitted or checked by a gas safe engineer, other wise my insurance would be void.

Does this last point mean I can fit the gas pipework and get it checked or am I better to get the lot fitted by a specialist. If so, where do I go to get this done (I don't think my local central heating engineer would be interested) and how much would the likely cost be to run a metre of pipework and tee into the cooker pipework?

    Ta all.

  2. As speaking as a domestic Gas Safe engineer, I would recommend you have the Propex fitted correctly, according to manuacturers instructions and the Gas Regulations.. I am sure this will also be the view of TLB.

Your vehicle insurance may be void if the unit fails and causes a fire or worse...death...

Please visit the Gas Safe register to find a suitable engineer.. or try your local caravan / motorhome dealer, they'll know or will employ an engineer that can install and certify the heater..

Please do not risk fitting it yourself..

  3. Fit the Propex securely inside the vehicle, drill the floor avoiding any chassis rails.
Make sure the combustion air pipes are fitted securely, the exhast side pipe must face down wind (rearmost) from the inlet pipe.
Make sure your pipe connections are secure using gas ptfe tape not water ptfe tape. Make sure the gas pipes are secure & out of harms way. Once its all installed Run it & squirt soapy water on every joint to check for leaks. Once your happy that there are non, go to your local caravan specialist & ask them to check it all out for you.
If your not confident doing it then get them to do the whole job. :)

  4. thanks Chris, pretty much What I thought. Nice one.

  6. As long as you get it checked...... But ask the engineer whose going to check it if he's happy with you doing the work first.. Before you start..

Some engineers will not touch something that you have done yourself... But, would be happy if it was installed in the van when you bought it.. Loop hole..
