Problem with hot exhaust - fixed!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Stan, Dec 7, 2012.

  1. Thanks for the replies to my thread earlier in the week.

Today I am feeling a lot better and ventured outside to re-evaluate the engine again.

I popped the Rocker covers off (yet again!) set the timing mark (on the pully) and lined up the Dizzy mark with the rotar arm as required. Checked the Valves and then I realised what I had done.

My feeler blades are imperial on one end, metric the other end. In my haste and well under flu based conditions I somehow managed to use the Metric ones not the imperial!! ::)

I did wonder why the engine sounded so loud its like comparing the thickness of toast with a sheet of paper!

Readjusted correctly to 0.006 inches and its purring like a 1930's Germanic Cat that it is! The power is back and I checked the exhaust - is back to normal temperatures rather than Kebab spit!

So the moral of the story - if you are ill dont do car mechanics! If you are in a hurry dont do car mechanics!

Will keep an eye on the engine for a few days anyway and my strobe timing light should arrive soon so hopefully get it running even better.

  2. Well done, stan :)!

  3. Thanks mate - knew it was something stupid in the end! Stupid normally refers to me anyway! Doh!

  4. I reckon there will be a few having a little snigger at this but this is the type of thing I would do. Well would have, now I'll double check every time :)
