Not a car, I have to paint some angle I welded for a friend, Its new linished steel, he gave me a can of Hard Hat, I have read that is for bare metal but when I read up more on it it always says prime it, the only primer I have is etch, would that be ok, I know not much goes over Hamerite but does anyone know if it will go over the etch

Try a small area first for reaction, wait for a day.
Hammerite is notorious for reacting, the way it forms a skin then keeps solvent in the paint for weeks if you put it on thick.

I once pressure washed three week old Hammerite off a roof rack, then spent ages picking sticky white flakes off neighbours cars.

TBH I would wire wheel off the oxide around welds and go with thin coats of Hammerite.

I concur. Hammerite is a great product if you use thin layers with plenty of ‘curing’ time inbetween, as long as the metal is spotless.

  4. I've used hard hat it's very good primer I just went straight onto the metal. It's a thick paint and takes a while to cure
