Power Steering - What are the options?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by top banana racing, Mar 26, 2014.

  1. @Mrs Top Banana Racing wants to drive Ted but she's a ickle weak girly (and has buggered her shoulder).
What are the options on power steering?
    What are the costs?
Anyone got any REAL experience ? (NOT "a bloke down the pub said.......")

@Farrantini has it fitted to her bus, I meant to have a butchers at it, it was silky smooth whilst manoeuvring on the drive

    Farrantini and rickyrooo1 like this.
  4. It's cheap enough, I have everything needed, cost about £150 but will cost more if I go down the speed sensored route

Lite Steer is speed sensitive – don’t buy one that isn’t. http://www.litesteer.com/ This is what Farrantini has on her bus. £850 plus shipping and tax for a late bay DIY kit.

There are cheap kits about that require welding of the steering column or you could modify an EPAS system from another car – but your insurer might not like it.

  6. Lite steer is a based on a Corsa EPAS the same as the others on the market, I think they pick up the speed from the speedo drive, I have the links to it somewhere

  7. As I understand it, you can have a manual (rheostat) or a speed sensitive system (taken from g/box, wheel, speedo)
Corsa ones are dirt cheap, must come and look at yours Keith.

  8. Mines Litesteer with a sensor on the back of the speedo head.

  9. Trying to find the info or maker of that, lite steer won't help, not that I blame them

  10. Would the sensor be the same sort of thing used on scooby conversions to talk the ecu?

  11. Same in principle ie rotary transducer but smaller housing.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I've driven a litesteer one and it's great I have to say.
@Keith.H I haven't completely forgotten that measurement, but I only remember when I'm at home 15 miles away. :(

  13. get an even bigger steering wheel.....(semi-joking)

  14. Its to do with matching the pulses produced to the Corsa EPAS ECU which is attached to it, ive got loads of info saved in my favorites Glynn

  15. I can't get all technical but I can tell you it's FABULOUS!!! We have the litesteer and it's super sensitive at low speed then the EPAS cuts down the faster you go until it's not assisting at all - not sure I would want to be going 70mph (ok well more like 55mph) in a tin can with a crazy senstive steering system!

  16. @Top Banana Racing get yourself a pair of these, then you won't need power steering.
