Popping and conking out.

  1. Hi,

Just took the van out for a first real drive of 2014 after a spring clean service and after about 20 minutes of smooth sailing it started popping occasionally and then after about 5 minutes more it popped even 10 seconds or so and then lost power and died.

So, jumped out opened the boot to have a look to find spark lead to 4 hanging off and spark 4 loose.

Bit of further investigation and I also found that one of the vac hoses had slipped off.

So, refit of the plug, lead and vac hose, gave it a 5 minute rest, (we happened to conk out next to a pub - shame), and it started first time and was fine the whole way home.

So, question is - do you think there will be any lasting damage or have I just managed my first 'on road' mechanical fix?

  2. i would opt for basking in glory of first fix, pub part is the extra icing on the cake !
lasting damage can be dealt with later!

rickyrooo1 Hanging round like a bad smell

sounds similar to what i had on the way to skegness, hose was split and ran badly

  4. Your on the road fix, celebrated with the Pub "time out" Congrats... Just as if the VW gods were showing you how to handle set backs, don't panic and head straight the the Pub, to rest! LOL

  5. Do you mean the spark plug was loose? If so if take it out again and check the threads in the head. I had this happen once and the gasses escaping past the spark plug had damaged the threads, next time the van was used the head gave way as the heat from the escaping gasses had damaged it
    :)

  6. Yeah, plug was loose and lead had come off,(I assume it wobbled off as the plug was loose). I took it out, checked the thread and put it back in - making sure it was nice and tight.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check the head and then keep an eye on it next run.

I had two cracked heads. On one head one sparkplug would come loose because of the crack and fell out once. Another plug with a crack beside it was a pig to get started in the thread.
But apart from little smoke puffs from loose valve guides on starting and lowish compression the engine kept on running sort of ok.
