doh, first time out in the van this year, was running lovely, went down to Hayling island today, fine all the way there. half way home van started loosing power, and back fire under load .....couldn't get it over 20mph, so limped the last few miles home pulling over at every layby to let the traffic past. Seemed to rev fine when not under load for a while, but by the time I got it back on the drive it would cut out if I didn't keep the revs up I'm sure it will be something simple, I'll check all the connections again tomorrow and hoses etc. as my first thought are air leak some where .....any other ideas?
First thing I thought was distributor clamp not tight. If timing has moved, initially, acceleration (no load) will be ok but power will suffer the further the distributor slips. If you can't move the distributor by hand, it is tight enough and that isn't the fault!
could be, last time I dove it (last year) was down to @davidoft who played with the dizzy .....to be fair he did have to strip it down as the advance was seized from memory, but some thing might have slipped and dizzy was on its last legs I've got a new cheap electronic one on order from ebay which I ordered last night ....might check timing tomorrow one of the hoses that is blanked off on the manifold looked a bit iffy so I might change that to rule it out
I've probable done less than 100 miles since I gave the engine an overhaul an changed all the seals etc .....but that was probably getting on for 2 years ago
Back to basics Dale. timing. HT Leads, plugs, coil, tappets, dizzy set up and air leaks. Sounds like timing to me tbh.
cheers all, common consensus ignition then It must have been something simple as one minute it was running fine, the next awful typical that my indicators and hazards weren't working either .......think I must have knocked a wire off the flasher relay when I was fitting the stereo. Lesson learnt, carry some tools with you with the kids wife and baby in the van too, think they were all embarrassed with the queue of traffic behind
This could also be dirt in the carburettor or fuel starvation through blockage or blocked (by accident or modification) fuel tank breather pipes. You dont need much fuel to rev the engine but you need it to develop power. Popping comes with low fuel in the float bowl for instance.
well that is strange ......just popped the dizzy cap off, thought I'd check the points before timing it, an I noticed the brass contact at the end of the rotor was bent up wards out of shape never seen that before and don't know how it could have happened. I straightened it, put it back on and I can rev it now ....still not as good as it was, but looks like that was the problem, so cap is probably damaged although I cant see any I changed the split pipe blocking off the spigot on the manifold, and will wait till the new dizzy arrives later in the week, no point in doing any thing on the current dizzy and the dizzy clamp was tight
It is on a standard dizzy so not sure if it is an accuspark one .....I assume you've seen it happen before then ?
Not personally, I have looked at them, chucked them and put a decent one on, but others on here have. @1973daisey springs to mind (I think).
Got one of these on order http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-...-Vacuum-advance-SVDA-/351724591578?nav=SEARCH Will a standard rotor fit as I'll need to order a spare to carry.
As I thought, you had it laid up for 2 years, so you can't expect it to perform. As said, I think you should go through everything methodically.
I reckon it's that @davidoft messing with vans. I saw him on Saturday and now I need new wheel bearings.
There's a knocking noise that comes and goes. But David jacked the rear up and showed me the movement on the wheels. Deffo need bearings.
