Plymouth VW fest - it's not anymore, now its a music fest

  1. Just got back from Plympton weekend, went for the first time in 2010. Since then things have changed!

No auto jumble, no VW traders, lots of fast food outlets and trinket sellers.

The show and shine must have had about 3 entrants in it - I could have won with my bus and she ain't no concors example.

Splittys could be counted on 1 hand as could Bugs. No Karmann's - a spread of Bays and T25s but loads of T4s and bucket loads of T5s.

Over zealous 'Security' - aren't they always (give a small man a big badge and stand back and observe).

Only drinks purchased in the festival area were allowed.

However, it was nice to get away for the weekend and the couple with 'Dobby' the T25 parked next to us were very sociable and friendly.

Just don't think I will be going again at £75 per person and the Levellers were the main act who only performed for 40 mins.

Only my opinion - did anyone else go to this one????

  2. Shame we didn't know you we're going as its on our doorstep!! We didn't go partly because its too expensive but also have heard through the grapevine it's not about VWs anymore as you discovered. You could have bought your booze here and we wouldn't have charged a penny........ In fact you could have joined our BBQ!!!

  3. Jesus!! Plymoth Volksfest is £75 per person now???? it was like 30 for the entire weekend when i went before..
i havent been since 2010 either, spent a lot of the weekend in that gyroscope thing, which i imagine killed a few braincells.. haha
no auto jumble either?? that used to be the best bit!
that sounds crap! glad i didnt go, i was thinking about it, hopefully the bristol one wont be the same :/anyone going to the bristol one?

i hate it when festivals that used to be great get all commercialized and ruin by fools that only want to make money....

  4. Well we came away on Sunday at lunchtime and headed further west into Cornwall - weather was nice and warm on Sunday too.

I'm defo going to Bristol Volksfest and I know at least 3 of the Bristol based VW mechanics/parts/resto specialists will be there selling bits and bobs for your VW. Hopefully it will be Volksfest thru and thru and at £25 per head it is far more reasonable and affordable.

I'll put a A4 size 'late bay Sailorbill' in the front window so you can spot me if anyone from LateBay is going.

  6. Hi Stevagain - nope nothing but a window sticker.

The best shows I've been to are Bristol Volksfest, VanWest (at Brean) and I've heard that Dubs at the Pub is a good 'un too.

I just had a feeling as the Devon Chapter of Hells Angles rocked up that Plymouth isn't a VW event anymore.

  7. Dubs at the Pub was Ace this year But It' s secret so I'm not saying anything! Dub meet like it should be :0)

  8. I'd heard Dubs at the Pub was good. Wish I'd been able to go.

To be fair to the Devon Chapter bikers, all they did was keep themselves to themselves, ride their hogs up and down with loads of 'look at my ride,' and have a good drink.

I think for me it was the evolution away from a VW event to a general music fest that was a bit of a let down.

Looking ahead, if the RTTS is truly over don't be surprised that the Plymouth event becomes the 'new RTTS'.

  9. we did the first 3 Plymouth volkfest shows as a club but didn't like the way it was heading on the 3rd

we booked club camping and 2 members were turned away at the gate as they hadn't left enough room, the rest of us were squashed into a pitch too small

with non family music and chavs being sick everywhere the whole club stayed away ever since

  10. I went for free in return for doing some bar work a few years ago. I can't remember when exactly but ub40 were the headliners. I stayed in the staff area rather than than the camping area but I am just glad I didn't have to pay to go there. Full of chavs and stoners mixed with people that looked and smelled like they hadn't seen soap for years.
I still had a good time but only because I was on the bar.
Bristol is only a few weeks away and that will be epic, we have big plans....

  11. Were they being obtuse?

  12. Nope - the bikers just rode about a bit showing off their rides - some of which were very nicely customised.
