Generally, Yank machinists and the like are well aware of metric (the US car industry's been metric since the 90s). Just some don't seem to be able to get their heads round it. Not as if metric fasters are a rarity in the US.
One of my good red neck engineering type of mates is very much like that and is Whitworth this and Whitworth that and the only real thread etc etc. There’s also no such thing in his vernacular that remotely sounds like shock absorber, it’s road spring damper or he’s not listening to you .
