Petrol smell when the heating is on?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by icepug, Dec 4, 2012.

  1. Got the heating up and running but there seems to be a smell of petrol in the cab. Ive done a search but cant seem to find anything. I do know my best exchangers have holes in them, nothing to bad at all but my concertina pipes have little holes in them as well. have I just answered my own question or is there a common fault i do not know about? I have new heat exchanger and I am going to buy some new pipes but while I'm under there it would be good to know what else to look out for? Cheers in advance

Somewhere a fuel tank breather pipe is not connected. Mine was like that until I found all the pipes in the engine compartment and replaced the dust filled fabric bags with rubber pipes and joined up all the bare small metal pipes.

chances are if you've now reconnected the link from front to rear - i.e the heating then the smell is a petrol pipe gone porous or missing, when did you last change them? including breathers and tank filler?

As they^ say. As the air for the heating comes from the engine bay, it could be anything. If you have worn out carbs it will be stinky when you stop at the lights for instance
I will say though that if you can smell petrol through the heating it could be something to worry about so please check all your pipes, breathers etc etc. Nobody likes to see a camper on fire (well I do - bloody things, but nobody else does apparently).

  5. its a new van so the fuel pipes are on the list. i suppose there at the top now. not a problem though, i have some spares in the garage. I will let you know how I get on
