Petrol in oil

  1. Back off hols to notice that there was petrol underneath the bus and a strong smell of petrol on opening the hatch ( 1700 pancake). Petrol was under the air filter housing, in the air filter housing and in the crankcase. I drained 6 litres of oil/petrol out of the engine. I have a facet electric pump which is mounted on the firewall. I'm guessing that it must have siphoned throgh a defective float valve. Any one had this before and any gems to prevent it happening again. Thanks in anticipation Stu

  2. You need a pressure regulator. Never fit an electric pump without one. Unlike mech pumps which pump at different rates according to revs, electric ones go flat out all the time.

  3. Surely only while they ar running, this was when the van had not been used for a week. The pump is supposedly a 3 psi delivery and has been fine up to now. What pressure does a reg require, I have a reg from my kart racing days (su pump to motorcycle carb)

  4. can be that the float needles are not shutting off. allowing fuel to run past. Other common issue is with the mechanicall pump but as you dont have one that rules it out. Over pressurising the fuel system can cause damage to the needle valves so they dont shut.

As said above you will need a regulator. I have just fitted a filter king to my bay to regulate the fuel to 3psi for the 34 ICT's

  5. I imagine that the tank being where it is will allow fuel to siphon through given a defective valve seat (which is what I guess has happened) -- but it happened on level ground whilst my aging toes where in the Mediterranean. I dont know what started it to siphon as it were. I will fit a pressure reg and have already fitted new float valves but I dont want it to happen again.
