Parking in Europe

  1. Was wondering if anyone can help please!!!!

I am planning goingto Europe this summer in my camper and because of my work rotation where i work 2 weeks offshore then 3 weeks home my plan "WAS" to go to Santander and tour about north spain south of france and into Italy then leave the van in a secure car park and fly back to the UK go to work then fly back pickup the van and do another couple of weeks touring fly home work fly back and on the thrd trip take the van home BUT...................................

My insurance company has now informed me that unless i leave the camper with friends when i fly back it will notbe covered, even in a secure airport car park???????????

Has anybody had any experience like this, I appreciate it is probably unusual to leave the camper for two to three weeks at a time but surely a secure airport car park or similiar 24 hour CCTV / security covered car park
would be even better than leaving it on a friends driveway?

Any help appreciated as this has blown my plans out the window now as lving in John O'groats it would take me most of my holiday to get there in time to turn to go back:(:(

Wonder if it's possible to park at a compound where all the broken down bays sit while awaiting recovery by the insurance companies?

I'd put it in an airport car park and invent a friend for the insurance company.

You can leave it with my mate Stelios Haji-Ioannou.

  5. Ring them back and tell them it unreasonable and you will consider moving elsewhere on renewal unless they help.
Ask them to ring the underwriters and get express permission for you to leave it in a secure airport car park.

Tell them that would be far safer than leaving it on a friends driveway as friends would not be there 7 days a week.
Tell them it far less of a risk and just keep insisting they provide cover. Be firm but friendly, let them know this isn't going away with a simple NO from them. They have to help.

Tell them you have friends with camper vans whose insurance has provided such cover when asked

  6. Could you not rent a lock up? Most if not all insurers won’t cover the van unless it’s in a locked garage or you are ‘using it’

  7. Is he not in Greece though?

Tell your boss that you are being screened for Coronavirus, and it takes six months to get the all clear.

  9. I rang them (Justkampers insurance and Highway) and they are adament they will only provide cover if its with a friend or family as they can check on it

To be honest the person i was speaking to could see the nonsense that it would be "safer" parked in a driveway somewhere where people go to work etc as opposed to a CCTV cover car park that needs the ticket to get out of???

I am gutted because this will make the tour impossible trying to do it either as one trip or several back and forwards trips and the irony is i would be covered at a UK airport car park?????

  10. I thought you had to be careful about lying to insurers ... say something goes wrong and then they ask for proof of these friends ... what you going to say then ... I made it up to make you feel better

I would ask them to show me where in the small print it says your uninsured under the given circumstances .

I had a insurance company tell me my "family ' holiday insurance didn't cover my 20 and 21 year olds unless they were mature students . I asked to see the small print on that . I got a call back saying they were wrong and kids would be covered . That was for a period of time in Australia.

  13. Im telling him to say that as a way of getting his insurance company to contact the underwriters and add airport parking to his cover!

I'm not suggesting anyone lies to the insurance or doesn't get cover.

  14. Ask them to ring the underwriters and ask them the question. I bet they didn't ask the underwriters, they will have just said no based on the standard policy.

Tell them you don't mind paying a small extra premium, even though there is no increased risk!

  16. but telling them something that isn't true whatever the outcome is misrepresentation ... take a look at the financial ombudsman page if you don't believe me

  17. I haven't suggested they say something that isn't true to the insurance or suggest they invent a friend.

I've suggested Kevin Smith tells them he has 'friends with camper vans whose insurance has provided such cover when asked'.
When i asked my insurance company to ring the underwriters to make an exception to the standard policy they did! My policy states the van must be garaged when not being driven. When i had to leave it in a farmers field for the summer whilst awaiting some engine work they told me i wouldn't be covered by my insurance. I told them they must ring the underwriters and do what they needed to to ensure my cover remained valid. I was firm and friendly and they did what i asked and i remained insured. So what i am suggesting Kevin says is perfectly accurate and legal, there is no misrepresentation.

  18. Cheers Paulcalf think there is a confusion where Day told me to invent a friend and leave it at the airport anyway which i wouldn't just in case it did go missing and i had no cover i would happily pay a little extra premium to be able to leave it in a secure airport carpark and would actually be a lot happier doing that than leaving it with a friend.
I have a mate in Marbella and the insurance company said it is fine to leave it in his drive even though i told them he works in Alaska for 4 weeks at a time so wouldnt be looking after it but ehy were adamnet that was ok but secure parking was not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Definitely ask for proof of this clause.
I had expensive ‘commercial’ insurance through HSBC for a van and when I needed rescuing (11pm having dislocated my shoulder after visiting my i’ll grandma) they said no because the van had “signage” on it! A commercial insurance
Years later (having spent £300 on recovery) I thought to check - that turned in to a 6month investigation and 50 page booklet proving how their lie (signage wasn’t even a word used in their documents) had put me in a spiral of debt due to poor cash-flow and their unabated interest and charges levied against me. I got over £1000 back but should’ve been more.
Anyway...moral of the story...they might not be telling you the truth or simply don’t know what the truth is

  20. I would try a new insurer, like Lancaster as they are brokers and would negotiate with their underwriters on your behalf. I have my van and mgb with Lancaster successfully for years. Give them a call and see if they can help.
