Panic! Help with dizzy on engine build....

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nickyd, Nov 25, 2012.

  1. Hi,

After some advice from you engine builders please. I think I may have cocked up.....

I have been building my engine up but think I may have got the dizzy in the wrong position. The pic shows the engine at tdc. The rotor should be pointing to the notch in the dizzy but it doesn't.

If I spin the dizzy round then I think the vac can may foul the pump or fan belt?

Question is, what can I do that doesn't involve taking it apart again?!

Does number one have to fire where the notch is or can I move all the leads round one space on the cap?

Or have I not fully understood the workings of the dizzy?!

Any help most greatly appreciated :)

  2. As far as I can work out mine is 180 degrees out. I didn't think it could work like that!

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

it looks like you might have the drive a tooth out or so.
TBH you could spin the dizzy 45 degs clockwise. It doesn't matter that the notch will then be where No.2 lead is, the notch is just a notch.

  4. Really, your dissy doesn't care which way round it is, as long as the plug leads are in the right order. Yours doesn't look right, however.

Rotate the dissy to TDC on the compression stroke of number one. Don't confuse this with TDC on the exhaust stroke. Both valves should be shut on the compression stroke - worth popping the rocker cover off to check.

In this position, the rotor should point to the notch. If it doesn't, likely that the drive shaft in the case has been installed in the wrong position. Pull the dissy out, peer down the dissy hole and check that the drive dog slots are across the engine (side to side), with the offset slots closer to the pulley (from memory). If It's not in this position, you might want to gently pull it out and reposition it. Looks like you're 90* out.

  5. Zed beat me to it... :)

  6. Phew! Thought I was gonna have to split the case again for a minute....

    Thanks!
