Our 1974 bay camper has two sliding doors

  1. Hi Guys
We have just bought a 1974 bay camper and whilst looking at what panels need repairing we have discovered a sliding door on the drivers side, which has been welded up.
Is this rare? or just a nuisance?
Also can anyone tell us what style of bumper should be on the front, as someone has obviously done some constructive bodging and we have two different style front combinations, late bumper on early brackets, indicators adapted either side of vent grid, but wiring at bottom as though the lights were originally at bottom and no deformation panel, rather confused ???
    Cheers

  2. A twin slider , nice, does restrict you with regard to your camping area if you have both doors in use.

Bumpers should always be bent and dented, if there not I can sort it

  5. If it's a 74, then you should have the later, squarer, "Europa" style bumpers, and there should be deformation panel.

As for the twin sliding doors, welcome to the club! It's a small but select group that can line their buses up side by side, open the doors, and run through them at high speed*

*unfortunately there have never been enough twin sliders together in one place to do this

Most people consider twin sliders to be bad for converting to campers because the second sliding door prevents you from putting cupboards down the side of the van. There are ways around this though, it just requires you to think a bit smarter about layout.

Much cooler than having a kitchen :)

  7. Hi Guys,
thanks for your replies, we haven't seen very many double sliders so was guessing fairly rare, as far as practicality goes we want to go for a full width rock and roll and a row of cupboards along the back of the front seats anyway so having both doors open would be pretty cool in the summer! lol
Bumpers already bent and dented but thanks for the offer!
We currently have two high back seats, which restrict rear view quite badly and would like to replace with original either bench seats or driver plus double, any suggestions where we might source these?
    Cheers

  8. Very nice hailfrank, did the vented windows come with it originally?
I like the idea of the extra seating, is that boxed storage?

  9. Awesome paint

  11. Sadly HarryAnkle the "Awesome paint" will not be staying as a lot of the body work needs attention, it will however remain one of a kind as we have some very different ideas for it!
First though we need to get it MOT'd and on the road for the show season, kids are desperate to camp in it! lol Paint and panels will be done as a rolling restro.
