Open fire warning

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by paradox, Mar 15, 2013.

  1. My open fire wasent drawing properly so i got out the rods and brush to give it a sweep
I was puzzled as to why it wasent drawing properly as id only swept it two months ago

Along with the small amount of soot that fell was a pile of crinkled up plastic squares that had obviously caused a blockage

It puzzled me at first as to what they were and how they got there
Then i figured it out they were the remnents of crisp packets

My eldest daughter must have been chucking her empty packets on the fire and instead of burning straight away they must have been rising on the hot air then sticking further up and crinkling up a bit slowly building up

So bit of a warning for people with open fires

Dont chuck crisp packets on the fire as i will be educating my eldest when she gets home from school

  2. Well spotted Para - could quite easily have gone unnoticed to an unexperienced eye and resulted in a chimmney fire with who knows what consequences.

    Sound advice! :)

Like a hot air balloon! Never even thought about that. Might explain a few of the chimney fires that I've been to where the people claim it was swept last month as 3 buckets full if soot drop out ha ha ;)

  4. Put a golf ball on an open fire once when I were a nipper cue lots of very hot bits of rubber going in all directions.

Used to put crisp packets in the rayburn to make miniature crisp packets.

  5. Don't throw conkers on. Spent candles however go like the clappers.
