Decided to batten and plasterboard / fix the skirting and fill the gaps and paper. I don't have the skills to dot/dab and it's bound to go wrong. Just one prob is getting the plasterboard in a golf. What's best plaster to fill any gaps before I paper? I've also got a plasterboard partition wall with gaps at the end to fill - that's getting papered too Should I get some one coat? I believe its halfway between bonding and top coat? Any good for the gaps? Gonna nip to work for tools first, then I'll be back to say what the master-builders say before going to Jewsons to get ripped off for the materials... I've got 2/3 sheet of plasterboard in the cellar - enough to cover the area but in 3 bits and that's justgoing to make me more problems... Annoying!
You'd get 3/8 boards in a golf. If you're worried about getting them in and careful you can score a line down the middle of a board with a stanley knife and a straight edge. Confidently snap in half and the paper will hold both halves together (but you can fold them in half). For filling if theres a lot buy a bag of thistle board finish, if not you'd probably get away with regular type filler. Scrim tape not necessary if you're papering. I wouldn't use plasterboard that's been down in a cellar for even a short time. You're asking for trouble there. Don't rule out dot and dabbing such a small space. The stuff is very sticky, not at all like plaster. Just make sure you offer the boards up first, then make sure they're level with a long straight edge. You can put the adhesive on with a gauging trowel and use the excess to fill any gaps.
I plastered it in the end to save money. Not very good (read very bad) so no pics until I've sorted it out.
I was joking really Silver. I mixed it too sloppy but like a prat carried on regardless. No doubt because of that it'll crack. I'm going to skim it with bonding as well as I've got loads left. I know it'll be rough, but the whole room is so it'll match, then get a layer of that polystyrene wall paper stuff on before the lining paper - that should sort it if it sticks. Bloody decorating - I hate it.
I had a go at plastering our bathroom, but it was rough as anything when I'd finished. You think you got a nice smooth area then you put some more on and ruin it. However, as a remedial measure I got some of that polycell stuff you use to cover over artex and that, on top of my rough as ****holes plastering, did a fair job
If I'd of read this sooner I and the better half would of had a day trip out and fixed it for a cuppa and feeding.
I thought of you K, but everyone's time is precious to them. Didn't like to ask. Good news - after 1/2 hour scraping down the high points with an, um, scraper, I mixed some more plaster at a better consistancy and went over it. Looks ok now. Then I opened the cuboard built into the other alcove and gingerly removed the falling-off wallpaper. Same thing. This time I'll jam a bit of board in though. Feck it, I'm moving anyway.
What drive all the way here for 1 sqm of plaster? You might have been happy - I'd have been embaressed.
easyfil from jewson is awesome, skim it over your Rough plaster job then sand it down, sands down so easily! about 12 quid for a big bag!
