Nor me + it doesn't dip the oil level so you have to keep a proper dip-stick stashed somewhere, and a sump one won't fit after my engine's been "Lauried".

 I know and exact same thought went through my mind when I posted the pic and every time I drive it, look in the engine bay... That hex linkage also does my nut.

  5. Thanks people for the comments, good advice as usual.

  6. I've fitted one of the VDO dipstick senders and gauges and as others have said have kept catching the sender and actually bent it one time so much that it stopped working.

The problem is that they are far too long and so I shortened mine following the instructions I found here:

    http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=725620

It is now perfect length and really neat and I haven't caught it since.

There was also a comment about not being able to check your oil level with them. This isn't correct - as the instructions that came with it state, all you need to do is hold it next to the original and make a couple of marks on ot in the correct places.

As for how accurate it is I have no idea - keep meaning to test it by sticking it in some boiling water and comparing the temp to another thermometer in the water, but haven't got round to that yet. However as others have said you really just want to use it as a guide to how your engine is normally and keep an eye on it for anything non-normal.

  7. I have both an oil temperature and oil pressure gauge in a pod.

Additionally, there's a large and very bright red warning light for low oil pressure. It's a repeater for the standard VW one, which might not be visible in bright sunlight.

  8. You can stop the dipstick wires snagging by just putting a 2-way connector on the end of the cables - you can then unplug the dipstick before pulling it out.
