Oil Leek

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by chris_r582, Sep 5, 2012.

  1. After fitting bumpers to my crew cab today and found a small puddle of oil under the front of van. After a quite look it appears to be coming from the steering box. Now im hoping its just a seal but looking at it, it appears to be new (previous owner did a lot of work under the van).

If it is just a seal can this be easily fixed by keeping the box in place or will it be best the remove the box and rebuild on the bench? or (please say no) do i need a new one????

If your steering's ok and box looks reconditioned it may be nothing. I say this because mine did the same after I rebuilt it. I guessed the angle it would be installed at and filled on the bench. It dripped for a month or two but was coming from the filler. I'd over-filled it.

  3. Cheers i'll keep an eye on it. The steering feels fine, I only noticed it as on a different drive today so it stood out as a fresh puddle.

Puddle on a fresh drive's not great. Check the level?
taking these apart, cleaning, replacing seals and re-assembling to cure a leak is quite straightforward if it comes ro it. Replacing bearings etc is more tricky.

  5. The seals jumped straight into my mind so hopefully it will be a straight forward fix. As i said it looks new so hopefully wont be to hard to remove and refit.
