Sorry to do this, but what's the difference between 15w-40 petrol and diesel oil ?
Picked some up from GSF really cheap and didn't notice till I'd paid that it said diesel on the tin.
Just deciding if to use now, or save as the clean oil I put in to overwinter the old girl.

  2. Oils for diesels have more cleaning agents in them so they say.. and sometimes more zinc.. not really helpful in making a decision soz...
Bet most garages don't have a choice when they fill up a car on a service...

  4. ^this. Diesel oil additives are supposed to be bad for modern petrol cars, but I wouldn't think it would matter in an old van engine.

  5. Diesel oils where more alkaline to neutralise the acids of Diesel combustion but most now are universal.

It was a clearance line, but didn't mention diesel on website, just oil viscosity.

  7. It will be fine, the SAE 30 oils VW recommended in the day where high detergent Diesel oils.

  8. If it's any consolation, I fell for the same trick. Given the comments here I will give it a go.

  9. It’s fine to use. For some reason most 15w40 oils seem to be recommended for diesel engines however 15W40 grade is about perfect in our engines. Main thing is to change it regularly about every 2-3000 miles.

The oil is changed 3 times a year, once at the start of the season, again mid year and then she's put to bed with fresh oil at the end of the season.
May still keep it for the winter change.

Despite fitting a full flow filter I still find myself changing oil after about 4500-5000 miles because I dont like it when it gets black enough to hide the metallic colour of the dipstick .. no big chunks in it just fine carbon.

That corresponds to about twice a year.

I would just use the cheap oil - you are going to chuck it after less than 3000 miles, it would have gone 10000 miles or more in the diesel engine..
