Oil cooler new or used?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Gooders, Mar 22, 2019.

  1. In the process of building a type 4 engine and was wondering about the oil cooler. So should i use the one from the engine i have in the van at the moment which is good & give it a clean out and reuse it, or fit a new after market one?
Bit of a quandary, have heard stories about the aftermarket ones from the far east blowing out under pressure. Not coping with the 75psi oil pressure on a cold engine.
    Thoughts please.

  2. I'd trust the older one if you clean it out.

  3. Get some decent carbon and grease remover and soak it in it, Then steam clean out and dry thoroughly. The new ones need hitting with a hammer to fit.

Exactly what young Mr Snotts said!

Those aftermarket type 4 oil coolers have a few issues.

  5. Yep, re-use the old easily fitted, no leak, pressure proved quality built one.

Reuse oil pump as well if it’s original.
