oil burning off heat exchanger

  1. I have oil burning off the offside heat exchanger although I can't see where it's coming from.

The van has been stationary since last October so it could be a slow drip that's accumulated on the exchanger. I'm hoping it'll burn off during the run down to the MoT station.

Anyone else experience this? It could be dripping onto the bottom tinware and running onto the exchanger.

If it's a slight leak over time, I can live with that.

Anyone else have experience of this, I'm sure Im not the first!!

  2. If its a 1600 then probably leaking from the rocker cover, usually makes the cab smell a bit when you drive, it should burn off but you might like to change the gaskets and adjust the tappers whilst you are at it

    Cheers

Yep, change rocker gaskets and it'll probably go away.

  4. It's a 2 litre engine, but will try the rocker cover. Puzzling as there's no evidence of oil dripping and dry on the floor.

  5. If its like mine (similar problem) there was initially no major oil on the path - most prob burned off though it was evident there was some on the underside. Then suddenly it seemed to go while driving and the next day a big puddle appeared. It only comes out when engine on of course but needs rocker gasket changing ASAP. I've had trouble getting the covers off on a type 4 engine but not given up yet...

  6. When I put new covers on with new cork gaskets, they leaked. I have used the blue gasket sealant, no leaks.

will almost certainly be the pushrod tubes or rocker covers, if its only on the outside it will burn off fairly quickly

  8. Use a piece of rope :)
