FREE Oil bath air cleaner

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by CuppaT2, Jun 5, 2018.

  1. 1973 oil bath air cleaner. Not fully operational (though my van’s been running this thing for god-knows how long). Vacuum flaps missing and cool air intake welded shut, but the top part with the horse-hair filter is still in good shape. Missing some clips. Thermostatic valve non-functioning.

No takers by mid-July and I’ll have to bin it :(

    West London.

  2. Hi is this still available? if it is would you post it up to Scotland, just let me know how much please. I've currently got a pancake air filter thing but have been advised to get an original oil bath type, my pancake filter just ends up full of oil from the breather tube so currently have to run with the air filter cover off, effectively no air filter, so not good at all. Cheers.

  3. I certainly can, but if you are looking to replace an entire cleaner, you might want to look for a complete working unit first. As stated, this one is only part-functioning—it is stuck in the warm air intake position.

You should be able find one fully operational for around £50-75. I think @davidoft has a lot of bits - you might try asking him.

If you can’t find one, or you want to go ahead with this anyway, let me know. I am moving house at the end of July, but I will hold onto it until then.

  4. BTW, it looks like you have a ‘74. At some point in 1973 VW changed from oil bath to paper element air cleaners, so you might want to research the correct one. Does your engine bay have a mount like this?

  5. Cheers for the advice, no mine hasn't got that shelf, doesn't have anything that looks like it would take either system to be honest. When I bought the camper it came with the little chrome pancake filter and the van had had lots of bodywork done so not sure if the old stuff was cut away in that process. She is registered as a 73 but not sure if its the 74 spec, I'm not as up to speed on the campers as I was with the beetles when I had one so still lots to learn lol.
Thanks for the honesty with the air filter system, again not sure exactly how the oil baths work so thought maybe it was still better than what I've got currently lol, will have a scout and see if I can't find out exactly what I need then and get a fully operational system, just want to get the engine running smooth, she's always ran a bit erratic ever since we broke down once and they pulled the engine to replace the oil seal in the front of the gearbox to engine. Used to idle spot on but now sometimes she's fine and others she'll just splutter out when the engine is warm, have tried all sorts of adjustments and even had the carb overhauled last year to try to sort.

  8. Perfect, thank you CuppaT2, I'll get on the search for one of those as soon as I get back from work, whenever that is, was supposed to be home last Tuesday :-(

  9. Good luck! Do your own research, too - I’ve been wrong before :)
