Off to Dublin this weekend by train - any recommendations?

  1. I'm off to Dublin for a long weekend (not in the bus unfortunately as it's in many bits in several locations). I've never been before and intend to drink lots of Guinness, sample a bit of a céilidh and go walk around a bit.

Any recommended places to go (the only place on the itinerary so far is the Guinness brewery tour!) such as attractions, sights, bars, restaurants or places we can go walking around the hills and countryside for a day (although it will need to accessible by train)?

I am going by train from London to Hollyhead then the ferry to Dublin all for £38 each (and only booked 2 days in advance)! Leaving at 9am and get into Dublin about 5.15 pm. It takes a little longer than flying but its a better way to travel with some good food and a couple of beers. Apparently the journey leg from Chester to Anglesea is awesome as the train line skirts the coast and goes past seas views and castles. I gather similar fares are available from around the UK.

Manchester or Liverpool to Dublin = £33
York, Leeds, Birmingham or Hull to Dublin = £34

Trinity College is worth a visit. The Book of Kells is on display there in the library, which is wonderful.
Compact city which you can walk around easily. Guinness tour is a must.
    Friendly people.

    You'll have a great time :)

  6. get yourself to temple bar in the evening if possible as it is always a giggle there. and yes plenty of euro's will be needed. have a good one

  7. Lovely city Dublin and Temple Bar is a must on an evening, Guiness tour, Jameson's tour and O'Connel St for shopping. You'll have a great time, just wish it was me going. :beer_yum:

  8. It's a myth that the Guinness tastes better there, it's still minging! When you get to the end of the tour you get a pint at the top, look around at all the wasted pints where people take a sip then leave it.
I once got asked to leave the Guinness tour bar as they promote responsible drinking :)

Go and find a little bar off the beaten track and you won't be disappointed
