Not starting after being warm 1973 Westy

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by millyferrara, Jul 25, 2017.

  1. Had this problem for weeks and asking for some pointers on where this problem is occurring

Starts up straight away when cold. As soon as it is warm turn the key and it won't start. Red lights are showing on the dash.
I jump start it off my leisure battery and it starts straightaway.

Anyone experience this and fixed ?

Had new alternator as we though that this was the problem but it's still happening.
Thanks in advance for your advice as always

  3. Hi. Do you mean it turns over but doesn't fire up, or that it's not even turning over?
I've got a 1700 '73 Westy and have problems starting when warm. The way I do it is to turn on the ignition then slowly floor the accelerator then turn the key to start. She doesn't fire up first turn, takes a few seconds.

  4. Hi, it's not even turning over.

  5. Very possibly a "hot start" issue caused by a combination of various issues relating to the starter motor which prevents it spinning up when warm. If all connections are clean and tight then Thiscan be overcome in a my experience by fitting a hot start relay but you may find that over time that may not do the trick.

Im sure other may contribute more detail but issues can be poor live connections to starter motor (check earthstrap from engine to body in particular,) resistive wiring or ignition switch or a tired starter.

What tends to happen is that a starter which turns freely when cold tightens up, or solenoid gets sticky when hot from engine. It neeeds a bit more ooomph that cant be supplied via poor connections or 40 year old wiring connections and switch which puts resistance into the starting circuit. Usually its the feed to the solenoid that doesnt get sufficient current to it and thats what the relay fix solves. its easy to try the relay solution as a tmporary measure if it gets you going fo a while but there will be an underlying issue.

  6. You say hopefully? Is it fixed or are you waiting for it to break again?

  7. Forgot to say..its so easy to stick a new earth connection from battery direct to engine to see if that makes a difference!

  8. as said, clean up those starter solenoid connections and earth strap. check the main battery terminals are clean and tight and check battery volts, maybe the alternator isn't charging properly.

  9. At the moment it's fixed but this is my bus so you never know it might be broke tomorrow ha

  10. I know the feeling. Chances are if thats fixed it for now then that was the issue but as you say...dont bank on it lol!

  11. Incidentally, what made you swap th alternator as thats easy to idenify an issue with. Takes seconds with a multi meter?

  12. Nothing is easy for me ! Definitely coming to the next Techenders !!

  13. Three years ago I had same problem causing much embarrassment whilst at filling station waiting 20/30 minutes for it to cool sufficiently to then restart.:( I fitted a hot start relay and have never had the problem again (yet). I also carry a spare relay in case it fails. I agree that there is an underlying issue with the original wiring but I have no plans or desire to start stripping it out when there is this cheap and simple fix available.;)

  14. I believe it was because it kept changing voltage and we were losing power.

  15. If its any consolation then i have one fitted to. Its less strain on the wiring and ignition switch etc. Why exacerbate a known issue and weak point. I have read stories of faulty relays and buses being in gear where the bus has " moved itself" but its not somthing ive experienced and its unlikely a fused relay would fault with no power to the coil. More likely on start up. Which wouldnt be an issue really.

Relay in the engine bay too means its not getting wet and cruddy.

  17. It could be that simple! Jump lead froma clean bit of the engine to the battery negative would show that up when it occurs.
