    Pretty much what I suspected
but fed up all the same

    Type4 2.0FI

Valve gaps are still spot on since I last did them so I guess standard overheat/rings, barrel on 3.
    Choices
Quick motor out and repair whatever I find.
Full rebuild of the original engine that I've got in bits in several boxes.
    Subaru self conversion!

  2. I'll guess at a cracked head - valve blow past.

Try a leak down test if you have/can borrow the kit.

  4. Oh no

Good luck, at least you have the ability to sort out whatever you find........or self scooby.

You may as well mend that one for now, keeps you on the rd and if you decide to go scooby you can sell the Type 4 as a working engine.

Had to leave it at that for today, run out of time.
    No cracks in head
Obviously running rich which being FI is not so easy to fix
Will take barrel off 3 tomorrow and check rings.

Running rich is easy to fix, just adjust the mixture, looks like a blown gas ring perhaps ( head gasket), check if it has them, pictures are poop

  9. Is the inlet valve seating correctly? I might be wrong but it looks to be pushed open slightly? Can you compress it and check around the edge to see if it's seating, or if anything has blown past it whilst closed?

Well the only thing I've found that might have caused low compression was a dodgy spark plug thread, very close to giving up its plug. Valves seem ok so do rings/barrels.
Anyway, chose the best looking of spare pair of heads which had the tapped hole for the ts2, cleaned it up, lapped valves, spent a few hours trying to remove broken exchanger stud , finally drilled it out and tapped for a new one.
Cleaned lots of bits ready for refit tomorrow
    Fingers crossed!
Trying to keep it going for minimum cost at the moment, going to rebuild original engine later in the year.
