Noisy gearbox

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bernard Fishtrousers, Oct 29, 2019.

  1. I have read that VW transmissions can cope with about a millionty bhp for a short period of time. I however have an almost stock (009 & extractor exhaust) 1600 T1 engine & standard gearbox in my bay, it's done about 150,000 miles and the gearbox is becoming increasingly noisy. I've recently been pottering about without the cushions and this has drawn it to my attention. It's quiet enough when in top, but the intermediate ratios groan & whine horribly. Curiously it's silent in neutral with the clutch depressed.
Will it fail suddenly leaving me with no gears in the middle of no-where?
Or will it soldier on for another 150,000 miles?

    TIA

Assume you have checked oil level, or better still, changed it?

Bernard Fishtrousers and snotty like this.
  3. Changed the oil on my 6rib a couple of years ago and improved smoothness and sound a lot. Old oil smelt like cats wee! Word of warning, UNDO THE FILLER SCREW FIRST BEFORE THE DRAIN PLUG, just in case you drain the oil and then find the filler screw is stuck solid and then you would be stuffed if you need to get to a garage!

  4. Change gearbox oil for this...

Keep your hand OFF the gearstick inbetween changes... all will be well!

  5. It may just be trapped wind?

  6. I thought he was on about the pre Electric Choke Module.

  7. That stuff is of no use to me, I'm still enjoying the convenience & simplicity of a four speed bocks. The transmission oil has been changed a couple of times in the last five years, chap at the garage has been hearing the noise for a while.

What actually happens when the transmission fails?

  8. It’s awful. A loud explosion, followed by flying gearbox shrapnel. Few Bay owners survive it.

  9. Mine whines in 4th gear when under load, I change the gearbox oil every year with the Castrol Syntrans and fresh oil does quieten it for a while, Drain plug has no particles on it and old oil always looks clean with no visible metal.

I am ok with it. So many bad stories about folks buying dodgy boxes for quite a lot of money and some reports of new ones having issues.

Paying an expert to rebuild seems the safer option.

  10. It's transaxle gearbox oil & will do very well in your box, it quietened my four speed box considerably! I keep my hand away from the stick when not changing as this can lead to noise transference through the bodywork which amplifies the sound.

My gearbox whines when it warms up. When it was fitted about 9 years and 70000 miles back it whined initially more than the box that it replaced that had lost second gear after a trip to Devon.

I cleared it up a bit indirectly by knocking one of the output bearing adjusters round by a smidge ( 2mm) to stop one of the output shafts wobbling so badly that it damaged the age hardened seal and sprayed gearbox oil all over the outside of everything.
I was just minutely tweaking a slightly loose bearing..

But it has got more whiny.

    I think its Syntrans time.

Tonight I was driving at 50 and I could swear the whining was louder than the engine..

  12. ^this. Syntrans is just fine in a Bay box. Best there is.
