noise like something in hub caps

  1. We are getting a noise like there is a small stone in the hub caps on a couple of the wheels .is it time to change the wheel bearings or do they want greasing

  2. Have you looked for a stone in the hub cap?

  3.
  4. What kind of noise?

Wheel bearings is my first & only thought, unless someone has put a couple of pebbles in your hubcaps.
That was the sort of thing we did at school to the teachers we didn't like too much >:D

  7. Does the noise disapear when you brake. usually the sign of worn bearings. if its the rear they will need replacing. front ones ou can grease and adjust, but if there rumbling i'd replace them...

  8. No stones .that would be to easy.but it sounds like that..can only hear it when driving slow as its not very loud

  9. Check your stone guard, ours was bent and rubbing on the wheel but only at certain points

  10. Worn or dry CV joints can make a noise at low speeds, especially coming out of corners.

I think Yorkshire Campers has cracked it. I'll put you on the teaching list for Techenders Zoe. ;)

 Zoe is down for Gin masterclass and wheel noise lessons.

  13. I now suspect it to be the tops from gin bottles ,, how else would zoe know

Have you got beauty rings?? I've had one that puzzled me. It was only when checking tyre pressures that I noticed it rattled.

  15. It's the old "process of elimination" required.
First, can you pin the noise down to one particular wheel.
Does it do it at slow speed, if so get a helper to jog along and pin point the source area.
Take the hub cap/s off and see if the noise is still there.
Check the wheel nuts are tight.
As Birdy says, if you have beauty/trim rings, take them off and listen again.
If the noise is still there, jack the offending wheel up (following recommended safety procedures) and spin it to see if it makes the noise.
Grab the wheel at top and bottom and try to rock it too and fro to see if there is any play.
What do the bearings feel/sound like.
Is it the front disc shield as Yorkshire Campers suggests. Some times stones can get wedged behind (especially when these damn Councils keep putting chippings on the roads).
If it's from a rear wheel it could be a dry CV joint as Beakey mentioned. Check the boots/gaiters are in place.
May be something adrift inside the brake drum.
Just keep working through and eliminating the various parts.
Post again if you draw a blank.
