There are no timing marks on the pulley on my stock 1600 - Q1 - How do i find TDC - have read about screwdriver down sparkplug hole - seems realtively vague - does it work? Q2- If i want to fit a pulley with timing marks on it - how do i know where to align it? and while I'm about it ... Q3- what is the firing order please. Obviously bonus points if can answer all 3 correctly!
the screwdriver down part is true - although pencil is better....put spanner on pulley and turn over by hand watching pencil rise - just as it drops you can rock it back and fore slightly this is top - easy, firing order off top of head dunno but by the time i get home to check you'll have all the answeers...
Q1. Do you have no marks at all? Not even one notch? If you're worried about the vagueness you could use a vernier gauge/calipers, most will have a depth gauge. Q2. The pulley can only go on one way. Q3. 1-4-3-2
well i should imagine the timing wheel will have a key way in it for a key to lock the pulley on the shaft to stop slipping, there should be a notch in your pulley. put a white mark on it. and wind the engine over by hand with a spanner till the rotor arm is on no 1 position. just check which position no 1 lead is as it could be at the front of dizzy or back. there i a join in crankcase this is where you do your timing too , mark that with a white paint or marker , when you stick your timing light on it it will show up like a, fire cracker flickering, hope this helps. you could also check if the piston is tdc. but make sure you dont jam what ever you feel for it with. or drop it in the cylinder else you will be in a pile of poo.
must a have mark ......get a torch and look for it mate ,there should be a flat indent as well ....do the pencil trick and mark it up otherwise and get it timed from said mark like the boys said
