When thinking "that 2 tonne jack and stand set from local DIY store looks like a bargain" please ensure that the jack has sufficient lift to reach a structural point on the van....

I've just realised 340mm is not enough on a standard height van to meet the lowest structural point :0( my cheap mornings tinkering (adjusting the brakes) has just had a financial value attached to it!!

  2. This is where blocks of wood come in handy

  3. Lots of trolley jacks will not have enough reach on them....so as above get an old bit of fence post or a few bits of scaffold plank and use them to raise the lift.

Make sure that you use an axel stand though if using a jack and block of wood as it will be unstable. I always put the wheel under the suspension as well to ensure that it it all went wrong then would survive.

Seen several jack reln incidents in A&E involving broken bones

    Cheers

  4. A lot of the so called 'hi lift' jacks do so by having a very unstable upright angle on the lever. Easy to push the jack over. I'd go with a good set of chunky wooden blocks as said above and a set of axle stands.
